Lucky golden ticket winner and boy this was different for me. I want to put out some strong disclaimers, I am not normally a huge Italian wine fan, I find them to be in the earthy side of flavors with little fruit. If I had to pick an Italian wine to drink Iâd defer to amarones and even then towards the Zenato label as opposed to the Masi. Many Chiantis/Sangiovese based wines have always tasted flat in the mid palate for me with an often sour finish. Iâm a fan of big Californian wines. Itâs what I like and tend to buy and drink. That said hereâs my notes.
On pnp the wine is a very clear garnet. Very good clarity, itâs pretty in the glass. On swirl there are no legs. The cork, natural cork I believe, is clear, no sediment/crystal formation, minimal staining as belies its youth.
Aroma was hard for me to describe: maybe a woody/Herby, I think I picked up a hint of eucalyptus but this one confused me it was hinting at it but not overwhelming, I also got some either tart cherries or cranberry.
On to the taste wow this is tart! Really high acid/low pH. Seems to have some tannins with a tongue drying effect. Taste wise Iâm getting some tobacco notes, thereâs the woody herbally note too. With food this was better, I first tried this with three cheeses: Babybel Swiss it wasnât great, a parmigianio reggiano it was good, with an aged Gouda it was very good, the strong nutty flavor and fat did well. I also had this with a roasted chuck roast and it was good too. An hour into the experience the wine had a much better mid palate than other Sangiovese wines Iâve had but was still in that family. After dinner I saved the half bottle for the next day. It was just corked and no other saving methods were applied.
The next day the wine came together more. The eucalyptus note was gone, however, the herby woody flavor was still there though a bit softer. The tannins dropped out too and it was a better wine then day one but maybe not as complex. I still found the mid palate to be there too which was great.
All in all I thought it was good, better than most my other experiences with chiantis. You could drink this now or hold it for a year or too to let it meld a little more. Iâm not in the market for a wine like this but if youâre a Chianti fan I donât think you can go wrong here.

@sdfreedive I donât know what you mean by âminimal staining as belies its youth.â Minimal staining is what one would expect from a wine in its youth. Staining typically takes time to develop.
I was fortunate enough to be selected to rat this 2021 Tuscan blend, as the bottle caught me last week on the one day I was at the office! Iâm on vacation this week, enjoying Spring Break, so the bottle went on (another) road trip starting Friday, from Northern CA to Vegas where this report comes overlooking the Bellagio Fountains.
This 2021 Campo Pietra Rosso di Montepulciano has medium color depth with a gamet color hue. Upon initial PnP (occuring this afternoon around 5 pm), this wine is youthful but has moderate intensity. Earthy on the nose, it pairs nicely with a slice of pepperoni pizza from âSecret Pizzaâ located inside Cosmopolitan.
I still have about half the bottle remaining, which will be enjoyed tomorrow afternoon.
The wine is imported into the US by One Vine Wines. It is intriguing, especially at the Casemates price, especially as an import that likely has several years of cellaring ahead of it. Being in the Bay Area, many wines in my collection are new world, and Iâm always looking to diversify my collection, especially with a wine that will absolutely pair well with meats coming off my BBQ this summer.
