Greater SoCal/Temecula Event Feb 15th. 2020
2I am back in Temecula for this winter and realized my schedule is beginning to book up and seeing if we can put together another event. It was a lot of fun last winter. Since then Lisa and I have bought a house out her with a beautiful view overlooking the Temecula Valley so we have a great place to host.
We can have it in Temecula and depending on the date we have up two 2 spare rooms. I could try to set up a tasting at another winery as well. We are also willing to travel if that works best.
January and march are full up, but any weekend in February can work with the following caveats.
Feb 1 weekend - wide open
Feb 8 weekend - only one spare bedroom and would have to be in Temecula
Feb 15 weekend - wide open
Feb 22nd weekend - Lisa will be gone
Feb 29 weekend - Lisa will be gone

Ron, I believe you have these for me, if you can find them: Wellington Grenache, 14 St Supery Rutherford Merlot, 2 Cooper Barbera’s (one for my sis), and probably some 2016 Buena Vistas - Grenache, Carignane, Lagrien, & Valdigue. Honestly, I’m not picky about the vintages. If you’re not coming, let me/us know so I can keep your bottles resting peacefully.

Looks like February 15th is turning out to be the best date for a Temecula gathering. I will try to set up a tasting at a local winery at 4:00pm or so and anyone who wants to skip and convene at my place can aim for around 6:00pm. If anyone would like to stay for the night, let me know, we have a couple of spare rooms.
Please let me know if you plan on coming and if you want to join in on the tasting. I can whisper the addresses. When I have an idea of numbers I can talk to the wineries and let you know which one.
We will have some stuff to grill let me know what you would like to contribute for dinner. My first thought for wine theme is favorite house wine to have on hand, but I am open to suggestions.

I am a casual KCBS and SCA competitor (Team TBD Que), and can do some BBQ - pulled pork, ribs, whatever - if that helps.

@dbarrym That sounds fantastic. After talking with the wife we thought we might pick up some tamales and make posole (a thick soup). You can handle the BBQ.
Sounds good, I’ll need a final count 4 days before to pick up and prep the meat. Pork ribs, pulled pork, and cowboy beans (always a crowd favorite) from me, if you or someone else can pick up sides (plus some King’s Hawaiian buns and cole slaw for pulled pork sliders), that would be great. Oh, and a nice spicy Central Coast or Lodi zin goes great with my spicy/sweet rub profile.
@dbarrym For that, if we can make it, I’ll try to bring a Turley or something else like that. Middle-aged Petite Sirah also goes well with that sort of thing.
@klezman Great, I was also thinking of a Syrah/Shiraz but wanted to keep it simple…

As well as some Zins from the last RPM Tour. And dessert wines.
This may be a good opportunity to divest of bottles I can locate.

@hershelk what time does the tasting start? Good BBQ takes about 12 hours so I need to do the sleep vs. cook time tradeoff calculation

@dbarrym Don’t have a definitive yet as I was hoping to have more of a count to go on first. Wineries generally close at 5 or 6, so I was planning to aim for 4:30pm

@hershelk I haven’t forgotten – i’m still trying to see my updated availability. We got back from two trips, so i might need to stick around the house to appease the family. I’ll message again once i know for sure.
@hershelk confirming just me for tasting and dinner (if tasting spots are still open). My usual +1 is out of town, and my family would rather stay at home. I usually bring some sort of veggie/fruit side dish but I’d be happy to bring whatever needs bringing.

Its looking good for the 2 of us to make both the tasting and the party. We usually bring dessert items. I’ll have to check my bottle swap status, but I don’t think I have too many outstanding.

This is awesome! Fond memories of our very first Woot gathering in the area. Or possibly selective memory loss with a hint of denial. In any case, glad there seems to be a good group getting together. One of these days, @coffeemate and I will be back in the mix. Unfortunately not just yet. Have fun all!
We are set at Bottaia for Feb 15th at 4:00pm for a tasting with Charcuterie plates. It is a newer winery, but one my wife and I hang out at a lot. I will need a hard confirmation for the tasting by Wednesday, but you can always come to the gathering after. Gathering after the tasting starts at 6:00pm. So far I have the following, I will whisper locations to everyone individually. Please let me know for sure even if I have you as confirmed

I still have 3 guest rooms available at the house for any takers. I have seen interest, but not from anyone who has confirmed yet. Also we discovered that Bottaia is a 21+ only winery. However, we still plan to check if toddlers and babies are OK.
@hershelk We are as confirmed as possible given that two kids can cause last minute changes. We plan to get to the tasting as well. See you all next Saturday!

@klezman Sorry, but we checked with the Bottaia and they do not allow kids or infants. If you don’t have baby sitting support, one of you could join for the tasting and the other can hang out by our pool overlooking the Temecula Valley with the kids. Just let us know what you would like to do.

@klezman Just to make sure I have you down for one of the rooms at the house and one tasting. Bottaia is only about 10 minutes away form the house, and there are other wineries down the road with grounds to walk through. Ponte in particular as well as South Coast. If you want to switch off in the middle.

We never really set a theme for the event in terms of what wines people might want to bring to the gathering. @rjquillin suggested a blind tasting, but I thought it might be a bit too much when paired with the winery tasting. Some thoughts I had were
I am open to other suggestions as well.
@hershelk I like when these gatherings are more about opening the wines you’d open for those who appreciate it rather than the “cellar defenders” (as I read the suggestion). So maybe not full on “expensive wine” or “black tie buys”, but bring your good stuff!

@losthighwayz I expect we might not be back from the tasting till closer to 6. If you arrive before we do, I whispered the gate code with the address so you can hang out by the pool in back till we get back. If you need a bathroom, there is one in the large outbuilding that is unlocked. Go through the side door of the RV garage through the doorway into the bigger building and it is in the little alcove area.
Guest rooms are now all taken.
@hershelk. Hmm, guess you missed my post on bringing a macaroni salad and fruit salad (brought that 2 years ago to the concert at the LA Arboretum).
In addition to the theme wine, will probably bring some dessert wines.

Barry here…not going to make the tasting but still planning on attending the dinner. I will prep and do the ribs/pulled pork and cowboy beans in the AM and plan to arrive around 6 PM. I may bring a visiting coworker who will be in town, will confirm by Saturday but he would be for dinner only. Apologies for the delay in replying but have been recovering from recent surgery and wanted to be sure I’d be OK to go before replying. I may bring wine but with the food cost I’ll probably just mooch on what everyone else brings!
@dbarrym Sounds like a plan. Looking forward to trying the world class BBQ. Bring who you want and don’t worry about the wine there is always too much to go around and i have plenty extra on hand. I hope you are feeling well after your surgery.

Back at the house we will have ribs, pulled pork, cowboy beans, Posole and other yummy foods along with all the wines.
There is a hot tub with a beautiful view at the house, so feel free to bring suites. We have a pool as well but it won’t be heated and is pretty cold this time of the year. There is a beautiful view of the sunset from our back patio.

Just picked up supplies for the cook, was only able to find 5 good looking racks of spare ribs but that will be enough for about 15-18 people assuming some also have the pulled pork. I’d like to ask that someone bring a crockpot or slow cooker to keep the pulled pork warm as I only have one at the moment (needed for the beans). Also I believe that someone had offered to bring some Kings Hawaiian rolls for making pork sliders - please confirm. I’ll also bring BBQ sauce, coleslaw and some pickled onions for condiments for those who like to dress 'em up.
Confirming I will also be bringing a guest (John B ) with me.

Chiming in to say thank you to @Hershelk and Lisa. It was great to finally put some faces to names. Sorry we had to bail early-ish, Laurie was exhausted after our day Friday with some old friends visiting from the east coast.
After seeing the cork falling apart, I’m glad the Victory had held up!
