Labrat reporting late for duty! My apologies. In short, this is a great QPR. A lean and brighter zin style. Not your typical in your face dry creek valley jam monster.
Color: dark red hue
Skinny legs
Nose: spring flowers, some herbaceous thang, deep/dark red fruit
Taste: dark berries/plum, all spice with a touch of hibiscus. Medium tannins that plucker/dry your mouth on the finish
We enjoyed it with dinner at a local hot spot. Too fancy to recall the pairings (this was Friday)
Shared a taste with the young waitress. She said it was ok but did mention she’s not a big wine drinker (neither was I at her age). I asked her what she thought it was worth and she answered $15. I guessed $22 winery price and at the case price a must.
I just opened a bottle of the 2009 RandyZin last night for a dry-rubbed T-bone, so I feel that I can speak to both issues–
Oakiness—No problem, this is a wonderful blend of flavors (and I’m a guy that can’t stomach oaked Chardonnays!)
Longevity—Well, I’m drinking a 2009, no brick colors around the edges, it’s better than the day I bought it.
Caveat—this is a dry Zin, better with a tomato-based meal than straight beef— it likes a little acid. If you want a jammy–berry Zin, look elsewhere.
It’s been an absolutely hectic week here in Northern CA, and my thoughts are with everyone affected by the fires, both here as well as our friends and neighbors in Southern CA.
With that said, Ariana emailed with a lovely heads up that Randy’s Zin was en-route. I dropped it in the wine fridge upon receipt, and took it out for initial PnP. Viscosity is very pronounced, swirling the glass shows distinct legs, very common for a Zin. The wine tastes tight, also common for a Zin. Tannins are muted with higher acidity.
After one hour, the wine is significantly more open. I’m getting a jammy, bing cherry mid pallet with a black pepper, spice finish. The wine pairs excellent with Chicken tacos, and on night two, paired well with homemade chili. I estimated a CM per bottle price of $15, and I think that the case price is an absolute steal. This wine pairs well with food and will work well as a holiday party offering. I’d be intrigued to see how this would taste in a year or two, as Randy writes, because I really noticed an improvement from night 1 to night 2. I’m happy to answer any questions you all may have…thank you again to Ariana, @winedavid49, and the entire WCC team for the opportunity to rat again!
What’s up Case mates, Randy with Harvest Moon checking in. Thanks so much for checking out this current offer. For those who know the RandyZin, they know it is solid every year. Why? Because we blend it so. Our 2014 is packed full of spicy red-Candide fruit, bing cherry, floral. It’s great right now, and will continue to improve and integrate for the next 3-4 years.
Thanks again for stopping by and considering this awesome, smoking deal.

Oh my… See now this is EXACTLY why It’s so dangerous to be on 2nd Shift. I get home and look at these wine postings when I should be sleeping right thru until they’re sold out the next day. But noooooo…and then I wonder why my next CC statement needs special attention, thanks!!
@hscottk I’d look at this somewhat akin to Wellington Duke compared to his standard bottlings. At least the past vintages I’ve tasted, which were generally fresh and without much time in bottle. Meant to be more of a fruity and young-drinking wine (although as the comment above notes, it seems to age nicely as per Randy’s other wines).
Dang it. I was hoping it would be sold out, so I wouldn’t be tempted. This sounds like something I can’t pass up though. Now I have a bit of time before it gets here to find yet another hiding place for 12 more bottles. The usual spots are taken.
The 2014 Sonoma County RandyZin is a fun blend of Sonoma County Zinfandel and Sangiovese. This wine consists of 85% Sonoma County Zin and 15% Alexander Valley Sangiovese. It’s 100% 2014 vintage. Year in and out, this blend promises floral red and dark fruits, various exotic spices and a touch of new oak to pair incredibly with your backyard BBQ.
Feeling a little Randy today?
Classic medium yet electric hue pours into glass. Dark floral fruit aromas lift out of glass and into nose. Spice, toast and more fruit follows. Fresh plum, ripe black raspberry and cassis fills the mouth. This is a well-balanced wine with a weighted mouthfeel yet juicy elegance lingers after the wine is swallowed.
Vintage and Winemaker Notes
This wine is a compilation of 6 different blocks harvested between early September and mid-October 2014. Each lot was fermented separately in 3/4 ton open top fermentors. Three types of of oak chips were added at crush for solid foundation of aromas and flavors to build upon. The various lots were racked together twice during their 15 months in barrel and the 370 cases were bottled in January 2016.
Production Notes
16 barrels produced and bottled…
Cooperage Notes
Non, light and medium toast oak chips were added at crush and 20% medium toast french oak was used during the first 8 months of aging.

Harvest Moon Estate and Winery was founded on growing, producing and bottling world-class Russian River Valley wine in a balanced, elegant style. Our premise is that Russian River Valley Zinfandel can be just as layered and complex as any Pinot Noir or Bordeaux variety in the world and receive the same respect. The Pitts family has grown quality grapes in the Russian River Valley since 1976. In 2000, son Randy reverse migrated from San Francisco back to Sonoma County to assume the farming responsibilities at the family’s modest nine-acre ranch. In conjunction with lessons on farming by his Dad and a few viticulture/enology courses at the local junior college, Randy made a barrel of homemade Zinfandel off the ranch’s back block which turned out exceptionally tasty. Quickly concluding that properly farmed and judiciously fermented, Zinfandel has great capabilities of being California’s own wine nobility. The growers-turned winemakers birthed their inaugural vintage in 2002 and look forward to making their Zinprint on the winescene for decades to come.

@rjquillin I’m interested in a split. Local. Although pretty sure I went in on one months ago and never heard back on meeting up to get my share. Let me know.
@nlmiller@jrbw3 Late checking back. Actually had to do some real work this eve. If you already ordered, check with jrbw3 to split. Rob, I’m still holding your order(s). Maybe this weekend??
@jrbw3@ttboy23 I’m pulling the trigger and will be happy to share. I’m in the Grand Rapids area and could probably get to Kalamazoo or Lansing areas without too much trouble.
@nlmiller@ttboy23 I will be in GR 11/8, 9 but I’m guessing you won’t have it by then. If so, I’m in. If not, logistics are a problem. Thanks for the offer!
Generally a good wine but had a couple of bottles where the wine had bled up the cork (in a narrow line) after being laid down and these were not so good. Anyone else experience this? Still have a few to go!

The nose is incredible Zin/earthy profile…
I would definitely buy this again!!!
@cole103 Thanked!
@cole103 Great - thanks for the input

Very tempted by this - any rats or winery input on the “oakiness” of this offer?
and on the longevity?
@ctmariner RIght? Where is everyone…busy making costumes? LOL
@ttboy23 Yep - pretty quiet on here. Maybe I can say this is a Halloween treat for myself!
@ctmariner @ttboy23 I suspect Randy is dealing with evacuations and fire danger in the RRV…
Wondering how this compares with his RRV Zinfandel. Thoughts anyone?

I’m up for a SoCal case split.
@rjquillin I’m in Orange, if you are close. No car though, so we would have to figure out delivery.
@PapaPerry
I’m in San Diego, so likely not a great match.
I do find my way to WLA on occasion, and to see @cortot, but Orange, not so much.
@CorTot @rjquillin understood. Good luck on getting a case.
@rjquillin I’m interested in a split. Local. Although pretty sure I went in on one months ago and never heard back on meeting up to get my share. Let me know.
I’d be happy to take some in a split.
Thanks - always good to get winery input - think this is going to tip me over the edge and order!
Anyone in SW Michigan interested in part of a case? I’m pretty sure I’m in, but don’t really need a full case right now.
@nlmiller I’m in and will share!

@jrbw3 @ttboy23 Yeah, they’re estimating Nov 18 - 20 for delivery.
I’ll grab a case in PDX if one or two others are interested…
Can someone confirm abv? Specs say 13.8 but bottle on the splash page shows 14.4. Thx.
If anyone in the Baltimore DC area is looking to split a case let me know.
@cobrent or any other Denver peeps, want to split? I’ll buy.
@knlprez Hi - I can help on a case, but would prefer to be a “minority partner”, maybe 3? In addition to the snow, I’m buried in stored wine!
Love me some Zin in FL

How does this compare to the RRV Zinfandel 2010?
