Marqués de Terán Special Selection Spanish Rioja
3 bottles for $69.99 $23.33/bottle + $2.67/bottle shipping
Case of 12 for $214.99 $17.92/bottle + $1/bottle shipping
Love that there are some old world wines being offered BUT for the price point there are literally hundreds of better Riojas with more age in general, more oak age and from better vintages. Did I miss something that makes this a “special selection” or is it labeled as such since it couldn’t be classified as even a crianza?
@pjoeltyler Agree on all accounts (but especially the part about offering Old World wines. Before I discovered Casemates I gravitated to Spanish wines for their QPR and the confidence offered by the D.O.Ca.)
A little more info from the producer’s website. Doesn’t really answer your question but hey!
Marqués de Terán Cosecha Especial is the result of a manual selection of clusters and petioles followed by pre-fermentation cryomaceration in stainless steel tanks, with gentle blending and submerging cycles. This process is complemented with prolonged post-fermentation maceration to achieve a wine with full aromas of ripe red fruit and stone fruits. Its aromas of ripe fruit take us back to the typical aromas of harvest. Long and unctuous in the mouth, dense and well-structured albeit not aggressive. Sweet, ripe tannins remain for a long time on the finish, providing sensations of fullness and complexity.
I got started with wine from a Spanish girl friend who introduced me to Rioja…most of which was purchased at Trader Joe’s. I know Spanish wine has been “discovered” these days, but I really do miss those $8 bottles from Trader Joe’s.
Colour: Deep cherry red with purple hues. Bright and clean.
Aroma: Red ripe fruit aromas from the grape harvest, well balanced with toasted notes and spices from the new oak.
Palate: Long, structured and creamy mouth with sweet and ripe tannins that leave a long, plenty and complex taste.
Food Pairings: Spicy dishes, red meats, and cheese.
“Dark-berry aromas with a light and bright floral edge. There’s attractive fragrance on offer here. The palate has a smooth array of rich blueberries and blackberries and spicy oak to close. Great depth and purity. Pure tempranillo. Drink or hold.” -93 Points, James Suckling

2016 Marqués de Terán Rioja Seleccion Especial
Marques de Teran gracefully blends the history of a royal family with modern winemaking and a vision to the future. The architecture of the stunning winery is the most avant-garde in La Rioja and one of the most advanced in the world. 80% of the surface of the winery is built into a hill. Naturally, the winery uses gravity flow to the receive and transport the grapes and wine in the lightest way possible. The commitment to quality and technology is of the highest magnitude. At the same time, the wine is bottled unfiltered, so expect some sediment. The winery insisted on capturing the essence of the fruit in the bottle, so the wine is fresh as possible. You can taste the difference in this wine.
