What a lovely surprise when we received the email from Alice yesterday morning, telling us a package was on our way! We eagerly waited for the UPS truck to arriveâŚand waitedâŚand waitedâŚThe truck showed up at 5:35 PM, six and a half hours before this offer was going live! With no time to properly chill the bottle, into the freezer it went and we hoped for the best.
Popped it open about half an hour later, at 54 degrees. Most of these notes are my wifeâs, as I was cooking and couldnât properly taste much. We also had a leftover glass of the Iron Horse 2017 Heart of the Vineyard Chardonnay, which we used as a comparison.
Color: Clear, pale yellow. Somewhat lighter than the IH.
Nose: Honeysuckle, slate, grass. Not a ton of fruit on the initial pour, surprisingly.
Taste: Strikingly dryâmakes the IH taste almost sweet in comparison. Not drying though; thereâs no astringency and Iâd describe the mouthfeel as round. Not a ton of acidity, but thereâs some lemon zest in there. Also grassy, floral, mineral notes. Iâm reminded of enoki mushrooms but have no idea why Iâm making that connection. Finish is fairly long and pleasant, with none of the persistent stickiness I get from some white wines.
As per usual, we gave the kids a whiff, and we also shared a glass with a neighbor in our building.
8-year-old: âA bit woodyâ; IH is âmore brightâ
5-year-old: âUmmâŚblackberries?â (Not sure about this oneâŚ)
Neighbor: âI do not like buttery, oaky chardonnays. This is not a buttery, oaky chardonnay.â
We had a somewhatâŚeclectic dinner, which was perhaps good for pitting the wine against several foods. It was excellent with a chili pepper chicken salad and with a chevre/manchego mac and cheese (this is how we use up cheese scraps); the wine cleaned up the spiciness and tanginess of the foods nicely. It was similarly good with pan-fried chicken cutlets. Not as good with leftover gumbo or with panko-crusted tofu; IHâs greater acidity worked better with these dishes.
About an hour in, more of the fruit flavors started to come outâcrunchy bosc pear, nectarine, maybe some citrus. Iâm not sure if this change was due to temperature, aeration, or a quirk of the short delivery timeframe. Taking a sip at 1 AM makes me think the wine would have continued to improve with time, but it was perfectly tasty from the start.
Itâs a little hard to imagine given how cold it has been recently, but I think this is the sort of wine for sipping on the porch in the summerâitâs an easy-drinking wine but thereâs also enough going on to keep things interesting. It would probably also be great for picnics, Iâm thinking with a fried chicken sandwich and potato salad. We thought that a good price would be $10, and at the case price this is a steal. Iâm definitely in for a case and am only not ordering it this minute because I need to sleep before figuring out some logistical questions.
