That’s a tough one… Primrose = primus vulgaris. A search for Primus wine turns up a foreign producer but also somehow brings up the Leviathan red blend.

Well, Murphy is a well known Irish name (supposedly, in 1844, a family of Irish immigrants named Murphy led the first wagon train across the Sierras into California).
And one of our favorite wineries has their tasting room in Murphys! And IIRC, someone recently mentioned an El Jefe sighting!

I thought about Ch. Montelena based on their most (world) famous comment, but I’m not sure they have a cab in that price range. I could be wrong. Most of the other potential contenders for most famous don’t either.

Ironically, I don’t get the emails. I think because one time I ordered from Clark’s website and paid with PayPal using a PP specific email address. Then all email from WineSmith (including emails about rat bottles) started going to that address which I do not really monitor. I made a comment about it after missing a delivery and ever since then I am alerted to rat bottles via my preferred email address but the offer preview emails have ceased entirely. Weird…

They appear to be different Wetzels. AVV is owned by the Wetzel family and located in Healdsburg, CA. Chateau Bianca’s winemaker is named Wetzel and they are located in the Willamette Valley, OR.
Yours is probably the correct guess since Chateau Bianca has appeared on both WW and CM. I don’t believe we have ever had an Alexander Valley Vineyards offer but I was hopeful…

Wife and I discovered it in MO 6-7 years ago, with a great backstory. Apparently, Norton was the traditionally popular grape variety with wine lovers on the North side of the Missouri River while those on the South side of the river prided themselves on their Cynthiana wines. The debate raged on for many decades as to which was better until a botanist came along in 1992 and tested the DNA. Turns out they are genetically identical. They were the same grape the whole time!
We have also had it in VA where we were told it was their signature grape and originated there in VA. Told them that folks from MO might disagree. From what I have read there is still some disagreement as to where it originated and even some people who still insist that Norton and Cynthiana are two different grapes.

Yeah there is a great book about Thomas Jefferson on wine and iirc Norton and scuppernong grapes we’re what early Americans were making wine with. He didn’t like it so when he came back from France he brought cuttings back withe him. Sadly they didn’t know about grafting so it didn’t work out. Great book on early american wine drinking!

They appear to be different Wetzels. AVV is owned by the Wetzel family and located in Healdsburg, CA. Chateau Bianca’s winemaker is named Wetzel and they are located in the Willamette Valley, OR.
Yours is probably the correct guess since Chateau Bianca has appeared on both WW and CM. I don’t believe we have ever had an Alexander Valley Vineyards offer but I was hopeful…

Wife and I discovered it in MO 6-7 years ago, with a great backstory. Apparently, Norton was the traditionally popular grape variety with wine lovers on the North side of the Missouri River while those on the South side of the river prided themselves on their Cynthiana wines. The debate raged on for many decades as to which was better until a botanist came along in 1992 and tested the DNA. Turns out they are genetically identical. They were the same grape the whole time!
We have also had it in VA where we were told it was their signature grape and originated there in VA. Told them that folks from MO might disagree. From what I have read there is still some disagreement as to where it originated and even some people who still insist that Norton and Cynthiana are two different grapes.

Yeah there is a great book about Thomas Jefferson on wine and iirc Norton and scuppernong grapes we’re what early Americans were making wine with. He didn’t like it so when he came back from France he brought cuttings back withe him. Sadly they didn’t know about grafting so it didn’t work out. Great book on early american wine drinking!
