Looks like it’s not really necessary to provide any rattage on this one because of the enthusiastic comments. Due to shipping issues, I received the Pedroncelli Port this afternoon. And sure, I’m supposed to be working (from home), but since I’ve been missing the Friday afternoon beer cart at the office, I’ll take a break and confirm the positive feedback (for science).
As noted, it’s definitely 750 ml. We used the Coravin since we were only trying a few ounces.
My significant other & I paired it with 60% Cacao chocolate, almond biscotti and smoked cheddar. It matched best with the chocolate, which is great since that’s part of this offer. But it was also very complementary to the biscotti and cheddar – I’m looking forward to having this as a late-night treat.
In the glass, it’s garnet in color. On the nose, the alcohol is discernible, with warm caramel and it reminded the spouse of the cherry tobacco used by his father.
On the palate, the tannins are not overwhelming, and there’s a lovely lingering finish, with a pleasant very slight burn from the alcohol, more caramel, and some nuttiness. I haven’t tried a lot of Port as a comparison, but I definitely recommend this one. Enjoy!
@kfroehlich
Don’t think I have ever seen wine plated before. Plus the greenery in the background and a little sunlight filtering through… nice staging!
Was blessed to be able to enjoy those chocolate genache cupcakes in person at Pedroncelli on both the 2012 and 2014 RPM tours. This was the setup for our lunch in the winery’s barrel room. Food was served at that table in the background.
The 2013 is really good! This 2014 has higher residual sugar, though (9.7% vs 7.7%). This one is 5 years vs 3 years in neutral oak barrels. So this seems like it might be quite different than the 2013. We need a rat to make a comparison in the name of science!
@TimW@pedroncellifam Looking at 2009-2014 tech sheets it looks like pH came in pretty low in 2014. RS has sat in the 9-10% range except for the 2013, so maybe the 2013 is the outlier?
I’ve always loved this myself, and i have far too much port, so i got a three-pack. So much for “not buying more”.
Thanks for the remarks. While pH is an indicator, it’s just that. It’s part of the overall equation that gives us balance. I haven’t looked at the tech sheets to see the differences, but I know our style and what drives it. You might notice slight differences in the TA as well. The ABV will always be right around 19% as that is how we suspend fermentation. And the RS target is in that 9% range.
This is always a fun wine. The white pepper aromas and flavors took me decades to define. When a friend offered me a still wine made from Touriga Nacional and said “check out the white pepper on the nose” I had an ‘AH HA’ moment.
I love this wine as a dessert wine, but I also enjoy cooking with it!
Hope you enjoy your three bottles!
I have the 2012 (son’s birth year) and the 2013. The 2013 is great, and the chocolates pair well with a lot of wines. I’m out of space at this point, and wasn’t going to buy any more wine for a while until we thinned out the heard. I can’t pass this up.
received my case of port…what a wonderful sight, a case of 750ml bottles. Only disappointment was getting 2 chocolate boxes instead of 4. Still great deal.
@danandlisa@kawichris650
Honestly, I’d be shocked if these are 750s. It’s the same price as last year’s 500s. The photo on the spec sheet on their site doesn’t list the volume like the photo here does. It’s a blank spot on the label. It would be an awesome score though, if it is! Great deal at either size!
@karenhynes@kawichris650 Karen. Happy New Year. I don’t care either way. I bought a case, considering two. I look on their website and it says the 2014 is 750ml. Again, I don’t care. My case last year is long gone.
I swear I remember seeing a Ped vintage port offer with 375ml bottles and I specifically passed on it due to the bottle size. That must have been on some other platform, or perhaps the 375ml spec was a typo and was eventually corrected.
@danandlisa@karenhynes@kawichris650@pedroncellifam I love ports, I love dark chocolate and I love Pedroncelli wines. I have a very nice mix of your wines aging in my “cellar” and am delighted to add some more. Thanks for checking in!
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations)
2014 Pedroncelli Port & Wine Lover’s Chocolate - $25 = 13.88%
Just checking in.Sounds like your case is spoken for and since I love the Wellington, Winesmith, St Julian, and especially the Pedroncelli port, I’m getting a case. Not sure if there will be anything to split until I talk to the family. I’ll let you all know.
BTW, I think that I’m holding some port for a couple of you guys from a previous order.
2014 Pedroncelli Vintage Port Four Grapes, Dry Creek Valley
Tasting Notes
Aromas of blackberry, toffee, and cinnamon lead to deep flavors of ripe berry, caramel, and dark chocolate. A delicious and complex Port, well-balanced between the sugar and alcohol, with a rich and spicy finish. Cellar note: Although ready to drink now, this port will benefit from aging for the next 10 years.
Vineyard & Winemaking Notes
The grapes for this dessert wine came from Pedroncelli’s estate vineyard in Dry Creek Valley. The four acre vineyard was established in 1995. The following Portuguese varieties are planted: Tinta Madeira, Tinta Cao, Touriga Nacional, and Souzao. They are harvested as a field blend and each contributes acid, color, and flavor components. This is our twenty fifth vintage.
The 2014 season began early as the drought shaped the year. The following warm days and cool nights allowed the port grapes to reach full ripeness with balanced acids. The result is a rich wine with a high concentration of aromas and flavors. Harvested in mid-September the fruit was brought to the winery, destemmed, and crushed. Fermentation takes 7 days and is stopped by adding neutral grape spirits. The addition of spirits (also known as fortification) stops fermentation, leaving just the right amount of residual sugar. The young wine is then aged in neutral American oak barrels over 3 years during which the wine softens and matures adding oak notes and complexity
Port Wine Lover’s Dark Chocolate
Our Wine Lover’s Chocolate Collection takes this idea one step further, creating a way for people to experience the subtleties of wine and chocolate together without a lot of guesswork or pretension. The 54% cocoa blend of these dark chocolate drops is expertly curated to complement the rich, sweet quality of many Port wines. Our 54% dark chocolates are a perfect after-dinner treat, served along with a small glass of Port, of course!

The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. Since then, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family’s dedication to making fine wines.
Nine decades strong, we are still family owned and operated. It all adds up to tradition, heritage, and a family of wines you can enjoy with confidence.

We still haven’t opened any of the 2013s from the last offering… But if someone from Denver buys and is looking to split we would be in for 2 or 3. I’m sure they are great!
@knlprez Ordered…happy to share. If anyone else in Denver wants in let me know. Trying to limit cellar size and this has not helped, but maybe you can assist (and you can have the chocolate)!
@jdlantian@knlprez OK - if both of you want three, then the case is spoken for…if others from the area want to join we would have to figure out how to adjust.
@CObrent@jdlantian@knlprez
I also bought a case and would be fine with sharing up to 6 with Denver area folks. Just finished a bottle of 2013 the other night and it was wonderful.
@CObrent@jdlantian@knlprez@mtnzj
I would be happy to go half (6 bottles) on a case if it’s not spoken for. Or could do a few less (or more!) if needed.
@CObrent@jdlantian@knlprez@mtnzj@omnipotentotter I would love some of this port. I know I’m late to the party but if anyone is ok with letting go a bottle or three I’m definitely game. Cheer CO folk, have a great weekend!
Will this be good in a few years if stored? Currently, I have an ample supply of wine, a few hundred bottles, at least enough to get me through the Covid pandemic. I would like to give some as valentines presents and store the rest.
@pidaly I noticed that I missed an important note near the top of the page, Coffee had not kicked in yet: Although ready to drink now, this port will benefit from aging for the next 10 years.
@pedroncellifam@pidaly Hi - glad it can be stored (sealed) for a decade or more. However, since these are 750ml bottles and my spouse doesn’t do port (and I have no way of re-sealing other than pushing the cork back in the top), how long is TOO long to leave it open on the counter? Drinking a full bottle, alone, sounds unhealthy!
I don’t know about unhealthy, but it certainly would be unwise!
Because of the higher alcohol, and the residual sugar, fortified wines store very well. If you have an inert gas option (like Private Preserve-or a Corvin) and refrigerate the bottle it’ll last for months. If it just has the cork pushed back in and in a cool spot it’ll hold for a week or two (I’d still refrigerate it). It will degrade a bit, but won’t spoil. After that use it in a sauce, or make port soaked cherry brownies, or a port sundae (lots of recipes on our website). We never let a good partial bottle of port go to waste!
@CObrent@dirtdoctor@pidaly@rjquillin Haven’t tried one. A blogger buddy of mine did a pretty extensive study on wine preservation a while back. He found that the intert gas had the best effect and least negative impact on the wine. We also like the Coravin-but they are a bit pricey on the buy-in. (ours was a gift!)
@CObrent@dirtdoctor@pedroncellifam@pidaly
Purchased a couple hundred of them.
They work; I was a kickstarter.
I also have an Ar system I use, but these are handy for when I’m not home, and I give them as gifts with bottles of wine as well.
@CObrent@dirtdoctor@pedroncellifam@pidaly@rjquillin
I still swear by the Vacu-vin. When used properly, I have been able to store opened bottles for up to 10 days. The Repour device is definitely cool but even in bulk you pay $120 for 72 of them which are only good for 1 bottle apiece according to the manufacturer. I have preserved well over 72 bottles with Vacu-vin for 1/10th the price of the Repour and will continue to use it at no additional cost instead of having to shell out another $120 for the next 72 stoppers.
@CObrent@dirtdoctor@pedroncellifam@pidaly
The feature is the ease of use, but they are tall and may present a vertical storage issue, they can’t be horizontal. Claim is they’re easily good for a bottle, depending of course on how many times you open it and the headspace. If you drink half and use one, then finish the other half, I’ve used it again on another bottle; you’ve only used < 50% of its capability.
@chipgreen@pedroncellifam
Looking back, I didn’t really fully answer the question asked.
Customizable? Yup
Likely much better pricing than retail as well.
Retail is $1.67 each in the largest quantity (72) offered, but I have seen deals for less.
If I gift a quality, aged bottle, one of these is included.
Chip,
Long ago I did a Rat on one of the WW savers, a pump affair. It pulled the pressure down to about what you’d get if you were at ~10,000 feet or so; not a great reduction. These do better, but, ymmv.
I’ll stick to these for when I’m not home and the Ar rig for when I am.
@pedroncellifam@rjquillin
RJ, I remember it well. I received the same item. My review was a little less technical than yours, haha. Still have it - never use it.
Haven’t had Pedroncelli Port, but haven’t found any of his I didn’t like. I’ve been craving some Port for months, but no one carries anything in the small town/county I live in. During this stay home for COVID era, I haven’t made the 60-minute round trip drive to Knoxville in a long while. In for 12.
was a bit concerned with the RS, but co-incidentally opened up a 2013 two nights ago, and thought “I wonder if this will be coming back.” So was surprised to see it come up, as if it was destined to be. And if really 750, that put me over the edge fer sure.
Anyone in SC or Atlanta want to split a case? I’m in Midlands SC, but am in Charleston/Hilton Head regularly as well as Atlanta. (Definitely in for 3, but would love to get 6. Don’t have room for 12.)
Guess, I am in for a case. Only 3 - 2013 bottles left and those are 500ml. Look forward to the big bottles! The chocolate makes this deal even more fun.
We’ve got some of the 2011 and the 2012. Somehow we missed the 2103. I guess that justifies buying a whole case of the 2014 (?) I’ve heard the expression “a port in any storm”; well, we have our share of storms here in FL, so I guess I’ll be set for quite a while.
I never tried my 2013 yet, but after reading just a few of the comments and seeing the bottle size is also bigger, I’m in for another case. I’ll still sample the bottle I chilled earlier, but with my luck it would sell out if I waited any closer to the end of the offer.
/giphy problematic-silent-honey
Wanted to pop in after a long absence to say that I found that the wood-topped cork from a bottle of Lagavulin 16 is a perfect (squeaky tight) replacement for the standard Pedroncelli cork, assuming you’ll be keeping an open bottle around for more than a day or two. (Not that you need to rush through your last drams of Lagavullin, but in case - like me - you have a full drawer of whisky corks saved “just in case someday”… ).
@rjquillin Any SoCal meetups recently (or planned) that I’ve missed? “Life” has gotten all of my attention lately, hoping 2021 will be an improvement over 2020…
Looks like it’s not really necessary to provide any rattage on this one because of the enthusiastic comments. Due to shipping issues, I received the Pedroncelli Port this afternoon. @chipgreen I was trying to capture the wine’s color against a white background - not sure I was successful.
@kfroehlich thank you for reviewing even after the late arrival. and yes, pic looks great.
These are a great value at this price for 500 ml bottles, but at a 750 ml?! Off the charts!
@klezman Yeah…the price is going up on them, but I didn’t have time to do it before this offer…buy up now!
@pedroncellifam Thanks. We love your wines and this comment, well, we just added another case to our already purchased order.

At the time of this post, there’s no indication of the bottle size. Are these 500ml or 375ml?

@pidaly It ages wonderfully. I had the 1990 about 7 or 8 years ago. It was OUT STANDING!
@pedroncellifam @pidaly Hi - glad it can be stored (sealed) for a decade or more. However, since these are 750ml bottles and my spouse doesn’t do port (and I have no way of re-sealing other than pushing the cork back in the top), how long is TOO long to leave it open on the counter? Drinking a full bottle, alone, sounds unhealthy!
@CObrent @pidaly

Hi Ed.
Got a link to those recipes for the lazy ones?
And a reminder how well Pedroncelli treats orders from 'mates…

Has anyone tried using one of these Repour devices? Been tempted to order some and try it out.
@CObrent @dirtdoctor @pidaly @rjquillin Haven’t tried one. A blogger buddy of mine did a pretty extensive study on wine preservation a while back. He found that the intert gas had the best effect and least negative impact on the wine. We also like the Coravin-but they are a bit pricey on the buy-in. (ours was a gift!)
@CObrent @dirtdoctor @pedroncellifam @pidaly
Purchased a couple hundred of them.
They work; I was a kickstarter.
I also have an Ar system I use, but these are handy for when I’m not home, and I give them as gifts with bottles of wine as well.
@CObrent @dirtdoctor @pidaly @rjquillin very cool-what is the cost? and are they customizeable?
@CObrent @dirtdoctor @pedroncellifam @pidaly @rjquillin
@CObrent @dirtdoctor @pedroncellifam @pidaly
@chipgreen @pedroncellifam
@pedroncellifam @rjquillin

Apparently port has an odd effect on me…
Guess, I am in for a case. Only 3 - 2013 bottles left and those are 500ml. Look forward to the big bottles! The chocolate makes this deal even more fun.

You had me at Port!.. and Pedroncelli to boot!
We popped one of our '13 Ped Ports post dinner, and are thoroughly enjoying it with some chocolates this evening.
Looking forward to trying this vintage! Thanks Ed and David!

oh boy…gotta try this

@NatasG Wrong site!

This stuff is amazing!!!

@dbarrym Always have some T-caps in the drawer.
@rjquillin Any SoCal meetups recently (or planned) that I’ve missed? “Life” has gotten all of my attention lately, hoping 2021 will be an improvement over 2020…
I used my first bottle for Gordon Ramsay’s cranberry sauce with apples and it was delicious!!
