Yesterday, in a stroke of sheer genius and complete dumb luck, i opened a 2017 Pedroncelli Dry Rose of Zinfandel. I took no notes, so i opened up another bottle tonight and promised to pay attention.
It’s good. It’s fun. It’s refreshing. And goodness, it still feels like summer!
The bones about it – it’s dry and tart. The fruits that i wrote down were pear, barely ripe strawberry, kiwi, pineapple. As it’s been mentioned before, the wine is fruity and has the illusion of sweet, but isn’t. I’d dare say cranberry moves it too much into the acidic category. It has a good zing on the tongue, but has no spritz or bubbles.
As with last night, it was better warmed a touch. Out of a kitchen fridge it’s pretty straightforward with minimal nose. Even at room temp the glass i have now isn’t hugely aromatic, but the tastes do linger more. Perhaps the alcohol plays longer at room temperature, but it’s not a bad thing. So maybe 55-60F serving temp? Or go from fridge to warm and follow it along.
Wine pairing tonight was with pot pies and the wine was able to match wits with the richness of the pie crust. Last night we had it with BBQ and the smokiness didn’t really do the wine justice. I liked the pairing a lot better tonight.
No brainer for us. First got some way, way back on that other place. This is not the cheap sweet pink stuff that was so “in” a few years back. That stuff was/is right there with Wild Irish Rose. This is real Zen. Sure it’s pink. I say that the color is subversive so that it can be used as an agent of change for folks who think they want soda pop wine.
Don’t let the price fool you. This vineyard’s mortgage was paid off years ago and doesn’t need to be passed on to the customer. Finally, notice in the write-up that this is a long standing product. Pedroncelli knows how to make the stuff.
Thanksgiving is coming. Don’t be caught without a go with anything wine. Remember, cousin Dianne will be bringing those brussels sprouts poached in maple syrup. You need this wine for the feast.
@Lighter So, I am almost uniformly a red wine drinker. I VERY rarely slip in a sweet white when the weather is brutally hot and it just seems ok to. I normally wouldn’t look twice at a pink wine, remembering it as you have described it. Too sweet.
Your description seems to give this almost a “red wine” character, despite the color. Would that be a fair assessment? Meaning, would I keep it at 55 and drink it like a red, or would I want it more like a white or traditional pink wine?
I may still go for it as you say it’s not a sweet pink, but just trying to get comfortable with mixing pink in with my red .
@hail2skins@Lighter It’s not quite a red. I drink it like a bit fuller white if it’s with a meal. On it’s own, I chill it down and drink it like…well, frankly I drink it like water
@hail2skins I treat it like red. If your eyes are closed you would taste Zen. BUT it has less mouth feel to it. My wine vocabulary can’t get any closer.
I do use it as food wine. I don’t think it stands alone. It isn’t cheewy enough for me. Sitting off by myself with a book I’d choose almost anything else to drink.

This wine is a great all around wine. It’s light enough to enjoy in the waning days of summer so many of us are enjoying (it’s going to be 88 at the winery today) and buxom enough to drink the drizzle away (grey and drizzly in Omaha today) Nice hints of watermelon and strawberry, bright acidity, lengthy but clean finish. This is the 64th consecutive vintage of this wine. We are pretty fond of the style, and think you will be too!

Anyone able to compare this to the NXNW rose? (If not I’ll pull the specs up, I think they’re similar ph, which I’ve found to be a good indicator on rose/whites for my household’s palates)
@Jamileigh17 I enjoy both, but my gut says the Pedroncelli drinks closer to a red. It’s a little more firm, tannic, and best served closer to cellar temp than fridge temp.
The NxNW to me drinks like a red fruit driven white.
@Jamileigh17 I think the Pedroncelli is a better rose. As noted above it drinks closer to a red wine than a white and is a true rose. Have been drinking this since the 1970’s and never been disappointed. As others have said it is hard to go wrong with any Pedroncelli wine. A first class family operation.
@klezman@rjquillin There is just a whisper of saignee. The primary wine is free-run, “intentional” rose. I would agree with Ron, this stuff does age a few years…if you can wait that long!

Not more than 10 minutes ago I ordered a set of Reidel rose glasses (Target has them at an attractive price).
Then I stopped by to see what Casemates had up for sale…and discovered that it’s PEDRONCELLI - my favorite rose of all.
I opened up my first bottle years ago to celebrate the coming of spring; my palate wanted a change from the heavy reds of winter. It was exactly what I had been wanting…and is now the Official Beverage of the Washington D.C. Cherry Blossom Festival every year at my house. And it evaporates pretty quickly during the rest of the year as well.

Bright aromas of strawberry, orange, rose petals, and spice. Full flavors of candied raspberry and cherry with a hint of white pepper spice. Refreshing, clean and crisp with a delicate berryspice finish. Our Dry Rosé is made to be enjoyed upon release.
Vintage and Winemaker Notes
We have been producing our zinfandel-based Rosé since 1954. Grapes for our Dry Rosé were harvested from the Pedroncelli home ranch and the Bushnell Vineyard. The area’s well-drained rocky soils, hillsides and excellent microclimate enable zinfandel to develop generous fruit flavors. The grapes were harvested between the end of August and the first of September.
The 2017 growing season brought more than enough rain in spring and great growing conditions during the summer. The result is excellent quality grapes with an intensity of aromas and good acidity. Over the years, we have refined our approach when it comes to the style of our Dry Rosé. The focus is on crisp acidity and true varietal character allowing the fruit flavors to shine.
After pressing the fruit, fermentation took place in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks until dry. Even though it is made in a dry style, the wine retains a hint of sweetness because of the fruitiness of the zinfandel grape. Bottled a few months after harvest, the wine captures the freshness of the vintage.
The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. @MuABQ popped one and drank over the course of two nights. When poured into glass, it left a few bubbles along the meniscus but nothing rising from the bottom or noticable fizz on the tongue.
Sounds like you should talk to customer service. I would love to try a Ped sparkler, but these bottles aren’t them.

Both bottles I opened had strong effervescence not mentioned in the tasting notes.
