Alice let me know a bottle of wine was making its way through below zero temps to my door last week. I had no idea the bottle of Pink Aqua by Jose Rose would arrive before dinner with friends the next day.
We had planned an easy dinner of appetizers, a vegetarian ceviche salad and take out Thai. We couldn’t have asked for a better all around pairing.
The bottling is ……cute. Peachy pink Rose (this could almost pass as an orange wine) which had me thinking “oh no!” “Candy sweet”. I was wrong!
Wild strawberries at first whiff and first sip but that ended and had all of us trying to figure out what the other faint flavor was.(One past review mentioned watermelon- we didn’t taste that).
This is not a sweet wine. And it is not an overly dry wine. We agreed the mouthfeel was smooth- not juicy - not flinty, but smooth. Mid palate we had a bit of an acidic zing and tasted citrus, grapefruit and lime peel similar to many NZ Sauvignon Blancs. One of the guests liked the finish- citrusy and not too acidic. “Porch Pounder” was mentioned. We also had a bottle of 2Lads Pinot Verde we paired it against. While both wines were perfect for the spicy green curry, generally the Pink Aqua went well with all the dishes, spicy and non spicy, vegetarian and carnivorous.
Day two just a bit remained and I enjoyed the half glass without a pairing. It tasted much the same as the prior evening.
We don’t plan our summer around a casemates wine event but it has been below zero here lately and we are looking ahead. I believe this wine will be an overall crowd pleaser and a go to for most warm weather occasions. It is a screw top and truthfully, I appreciate that for relaxed summer drinking (as opposed to overly anxious Covid induced winter drinking). I am curious to see what the price point is. The internet has it at around 20 dollars a bottle. We have already decided we were in for a case or two.
@Jeanhp3 Thanks for the great review. It really helped me understand what this would be like and also get rid of some of the “fears” I had concerning it. Honestly I was already interested in this wine based on the specs and vineyard location. I think it’s a case where the wine might exceed the (fairly low?) expectations set by the silly name and marketing. It seems a wine like this would benefit from a more sophisticated description rather than one targeted at grocery store shelves.
@pmarin As someone who shops the end caps for sport I agree with you. Put this wine in a beautiful glass bottle with an elegant paper label and it could be marketed and sold for a much higher price. My nephew owned a wine touring business in Aix en Provence and this wine reminded me of some of the lovely wines we tasted from the small family owned wineries - where you would pump the wine just like at the gas station, fill your bottles and go home to cork them. The price point is very good and I believe it will be a great summer wine for everyone.

Bright and fresh aromas of strawberry and candied watermelon make for an inviting entry to this bottle. Lemon-peel and candied berry flavors show on the palate, which has a slightly vinous tone and is flat in texture. MK 5/1/21
Grenache rose from a respected vineyard and good looking specs at under $9 delivered too hard to resist. Add the complimentary rattage and I’m in. Plus my brother’s name is Jose. There you go.

A sustainably produced wine with low intervention. Made with focus, delivered with fun.
A layered and expressive Rosé, indicative of the Central Coast. Pink Agua has rich aromas of guava and honeydew that give way to strawberry and nectarine on the palate. The wine is unctuous, textural, and balanced - it’s a nuanced Rosé that develops over time.
The Grenache grapes used to produce this Rosé were grown in the Arroyo Grande Valley AVA in San Louis Obispo county at the dry-farmed Potrero vineyard. Coastal influence from the nearby Pacific Ocean, combined with the sandy loam soil, creates an ideal location for growing grapes with intense flavors while preserving the delicate acidity.

Vinification: Destemmed and skin macerated for 10 hours. Direct to press with a slow and cold fermentation.
