I got a golden ticket!
I picked this bottle up on the way to work and then invited the āfunā people in the office to try it with me at lunch huddled in my testing lab.
Most of those that joined me are not wine drinkers, and I am no expert, so please be kind to our inexperienced notes.
We all agreed this is a very enjoyable wine. Nice sipper, and also good with food.
The beer drinker in the group described it as ālight, but not is a taste kind of way and sweetā. Note of clarification - this is NOT a sweet wine. When I pushed for more details on sweet comment, he brought it around to fruity. Regarding the light comment, he meant something along the line of there is lots of flavor, but it isnāt thick or cloying in the mouth.
The bourbon drinker liked it, but didnāt have much more to say than that.
The sometime wine drinker agreed with the fruity notes and also said it had a nice spice to it, & guessed the Zin in the blend.
I personally really liked this wine. I am not much of a red drinker in the warmer months, but could easily see me sipping on this in the evenings. At first, it didnāt have much of a nose at all, but as it opened up I got a little chocolate and vanilla. It is light, and fruity, and a little smoky. It also totally held its own with the spicy falafel and hummus I had for lunch. Definitely something I would buy to sip on, serve with dinner, and if the price is right, make a killer sangria with.
TLDR: this wine goes great with politics and modern parenting. Donāt judge. Enjoyable to sip on over the course of the evening. Pizza wine. Party wine. I really donāt need more wine but at this price I am tempted to get a case.
The evening:
Hubby: we need to taste that lab rat wine, right?
Me: yes, we totally need to.
Me: (pops and pours, hands hubby wine, we clink glasses) cheers
Him, heating pizza for Kid 1: what happened to the June (smart oven)? (Pulls gross baking sheet out)
Me: I donāt know, wasnāt me!
Him: Iāll have to watch the recording of the food cooking
Kid 2: can I go outside?
Kid 1: Iām hungry, is my pizza ready yet?
Me: (inhales smell of wine) hmmā¦what do I smellā¦berries? What do you smell?
Him: (takes a big swig) umm, cherries? No, thatās what I tasted.
Me: if I was blind tasting this, I would swear itās a zin (brambly raspberries), but I swore the bottle said cab sauv. This better not be another Wellington blind tasting scenario where Iām losing my touch! (Looks at the bottle, reads the nice descriptor that about smoky Syrah, spicy zin, and structured cab franc) phew.
Him: you should just write what the bottle said as your review
Me: thanks. Spot on, though!
Him: are we still making that salad?
Me: I am so full from all the arepas we just ate (Colombian house guests, yum!). So no?
Him, rooting through fridge: wasnāt there risotto in here somewhere? (Finds it) Iām having that! Now Iām excited? Do you want to split it?
Me: nah, but thanks. This wine is really pleasing to the mouth (heh heh) especially on first sip. Explodes with fruit flavor but it not in a bomb-y way. Itās balanced. A little hot on the back end though. Maybe needs more air.
Him: can we watch the debate now?
Me: ok, can you send me those drinking game instructions?
(Watching)
Kid 1: can you play this board game with me? This debate is 2 hours? You will be watching it forever!
(Betoās opening remarks are half in Spanish) me: time to drink!
Kid 1: what are you eating?
Me: Colombian chocolate (Jet, for those of you playing at home). Want one?
Kid 2: can I have more iPad time?
Me: ok fine. You guys really need to take a shower though.
Kid 1: can we please wait and take one tomorrow?
Me: how smelly are you?
Kid 1: not very
(We all go back to what we are doing)
(Kid 1 spills root beer on the floor)
Him, to Kid 2: why are you watching on my YouTube account? No wonder all your videos are popping up for me!
Kid 1: why do you keep saying drink? What are you doing?
Me: itās a debate drinking gameā¦you drink when someone says certain things. You can play it with non-alcoholic drinks too.
Kid 1: well I canāt play because I spilled my drink.
Me, like 500 times: who is that person talking right now on the screen? They need to have permanent captions! (Looks down at empty wine glass, thinks about refill, but itās getting late and itās all the way over there)
Him: ok, itās time for bed (turns off TV)
Kid 1: you ate all that chocolate? Well no, I guess I had one and daddy did too.
Me: (roots around wine stuff drawer for Haleyās Corker, canāt find one so settled for ye olde wine.woot stopper)
(Kid 1, still on her phone)
Me: itās time for bed! Your new phone has the same usage rules as your iPad! (Thinking: should I pour myself more wine to bring upstairs? Nahā¦)
(Walks upstairs, finds Kid 2 watching her iPad)
Me, practicing my newly learned parenting skill of empathy and validation, rather than the exasperated yelling I want to do: I know it is so fun to watch your iPad! I wouldnāt want to stop either! But can we get ready for bed now so you can earn your rewards?
Kid 1: why is Kid 2 still watching her iPad? Thatās not fair, youāre not supposed to do that, you exceeded your time!
(Me thinking: you are ruining my perfect parenting moment! I was really connecting with her! Ok deep breaths!)
Kid 2 starting to get agitated: I didnāt know how long it was and it didnāt turn off!
Me: donāt worry about it, itās fine! Iāll pay more attention next time. Both of you need to get ready for bed!
Kid 2: can I have a book?
Me: yes, your father will read it to you
Me: (reads the second City of Ember book aloud for like 45 min to Kid 1 in my bed) ok itās time for bed
Kid 1: Iāll just lay here for a few minutesā¦(sees my phone), what are you reading?
Me: (exits the app) oh nothing
Kid 1: were you reading ahead or looking back?
Me: um, looking backā¦(what! Iām going to end up reading the whole thing out loud anyway! Sometimes a mom needs to skim ahead)
Kid 1: ok mommy, good night, I love you. See you tomorrow
@scott0210 good. Pleasant. Varietally appropriate. At this price, itās a steal. I did end up ordering a case.
Tasting notes summary (itās in there somewhere, I swear): brambly berries from the zin both on nose and first taste. Pleasing mouthfeel - round but not giant, if that makes sense. A little hot on the finish but not very tannic. I think more air would help that. Good with food or sipping on its own.
@aces219@scott0210 Agree about the price. In blind tastings this wine often gets guesses in the $50 range! Itās an easy drinker with lots of layers of flavor that come out once itās open.
I brought over my usual debauchery crew for a Tuesday afternoon libation. We had David the Dude, Charlie Chugsāa lot, and Connor the Lab Rat Review Guy (nickname pending).
David is a thoroughbred beer manāstouts, IIPAs, and American Pales are his medium. Charles digs spirits. I am an equal opportunity employer; however, I lean red wines and big beers.
We had Beyond Burgers on the grill and golly did this wine shine! David had some leftover pizza and said it worked with that OK too. We are in Los Angeles county, it is a clear day, light breeze, and 83 degrees on the patio. The sweet blueberry notes and lively spice (cardamom, nutmeg, cinnamon maybe?) of this wine keep it bright enough to enjoy in the warmer evenings.
David, beer guy, said it has a similar attribute to an IPA in that each sip leaves you wanting another sip (disguised alcoholism perhaps). No, really, I believe that is the case and that he is describing the pronounced yet not overwhelming tannins. The further we sipped the more licorice came through and vanilla faded away.
Not a ton of nose, nice medium-ish light mouthfeel, aftertaste of red fruit skin and vanilla. Certainly a bit of smoke which really paired nicely with burgers. I feel this will be my go-to backyard cook-out, pool having, bbq eating red. Not sweet but just sweet enough, not heavy but perfectly substantial, and big enough without being polarizing. For sure a crowd pleaser.
I saved a few ounces to perseverate on once the debauchery gang departed. More nose now but still subtle. Spicier and almost jammy. Still damn fine balance.
TL;DR Great balance between fruity and spicyāfinish of smoky and vanilla. Best enjoyed at summer backyard bbq.
Charles did not have much to contribute: āTastes like a red blend, it is good. Iād drink it.ā Also, he said it has a maple syrupy thing going on.
The best wine I have picked up from Casemates was the Smith Devereux 2015 HÄnaialiŹ»i Napa Merlot. This is, of course, a completely different wine, but the company seems to make a great product that would seem to be excellent QPR at this price point. I am desperately trying to convince SWMBO (who thinks I have far too much wine) that I need this.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

Ripe red fruit, blackberry, licorice, dark chocolate, vanilla, toasty oak, crisp tannins, and black pepper.
Vintage and Winemaker Notes
2017 Smith Devereux No. 3 California Red Blend
Our California Red Blend is the 3rd release in the Smith Devereux portfolio of wines and pays homage to the 3 founders of the company. We also believe ā3ā is the magic number (yes it is, Schoolhouse Rock and De La Soul confirm this), just think about how many great things come in 3s, and without 1 and 2, you canāt make ā3ā.
3 is a crowd-pleasing blend that delivers with the perfect balance of full-bodied, luscious syrah with the smoky spice of zinfandel and the tannic backbone of cabernet franc. This wine should be uncorked without hesitation, at any occasion, and with everything from burgers and pizza to darn fine steak.

Our story began, as many great stories do, with music and wine. It was a serendipitous interview, a farmer with some of Napa Valleyās best grapes, and a seemingly impossible puzzle that brought us together. Weeks after meeting we shook hands backstage at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA and took on the deal that would lead us into a life-long friendship, the founding of a winery, and a plan to conquer the world. Wellā¦ the wine world. True world domination may actually be outside of our skill set.
We blended our backgrounds in music and wine, paired them with partner John Anthony Truchardās wine industry and farming expertise, and formed Smith Devereux.
We are driven by the simple goal of making world-class wines at modest prices.
Every bottle tells a story. We hope that our wines will become a part of yours.

@rjquillin Here are the specifics for you! At the end of the day this wine is all about being food friendly, layered and complex but incredibly easy drinking. Full of flavor and spice, we just won gold and 92 points from the Sunset Magazine Wine Competition and year after year the blend changes but the flavor profile stays the same.

2017 wine? Notes above state a harvest date of October 2016.
@kaolis Whoops, thatās a year off. Good catch!
I bought a case, but Iām open to splitting it with someone in the metro area in MN.
@gatwood I would take four bottles if youāre still interested in splitting the case.
@gatwood @springding I hope you both enjoy! And while Iām a huge fan of sharing I think (subjectively of course) that you should each buy a case!
