First Time Lab Rat here. Go easy on me, don’t know all the fancy wine lingo, but I’ve managed to pickup a few things. Don’t have any experience with Roses, but I do like a good Pinot Noir.
Popped the bottle this afternoon exchanging some wine with a casemate, (hopefully he’ll share later) then came home to put it the fridge for tasting tonight.
Ended up eating a sushi buffet for dinner to celebrate the boyfriend mom’s birthday (say that three times fast). After sufficiently letting our stomachs rest. We came to drink our wine.
We found the color to be light pink almost peachy.
Right from start we noticed fruit scents. Kind of earthy. Varied like a Pinot noir.
First taste is that this is a dry wine, no sweetness from residual sugar (one of those fancy wine words I picked up) at all. Kinda fruity with a tart finish and what I thought was lemon. The other half tasted cherry. I could taste the strawberry on the second sip and so could her. Boyfriend tasted raspberry, but I never got that. I’ll blame on my seasonal allergies and being in Atlanta.
He said the mouthfeel is good. It holds together nicely in the mouth. I agree.
We both think it got better as time went on about 20 minutes. I think it’s because it got a little warmer. He thinks it got better it cause it got some air. Would say it’s a refreshing wine good anytime of the year.
@Cynamon Sounds like a great summer sipper, especially at this price.
Thanks
Also for the mods, or did you do that by yourself? Great to see the legacy rat!
@Cynamon Thanks for the notes. I purchased the previous vintage of this wine and fully agree that it drinks much better after it warms up a little and gets some air. That goes for most Rosés though. Just as the color is in-between red and white, so should be the temperature at which it’s consumed.
@chipgreen What were your thoughts on the previous vintage? I looked at my Woot order history and see I bought a case, but can’t remember if I really liked it or if it was OK. This seems like a SCREAMING deal if it is tasty.
I always thought lab rats were a mythical thing, like unicorns or trickle down economics. Then I got an email from Casemates telling me that I’d become one (a lab rat, not a unicorn)!
Sat down to drink this last night with my girlfriend. She’s pretty much a North Carolina native, and likes her some muscadine wine. Personally, if I wanted to eat a bag of sugar I can think of better ways to do it, but to each their own glass.
Upon opening and pouring, this wine had a decent bouquet with a light alcohol tinge, but it was well hidden. The front palate had light acids with that lovely front-of-the-tongue tingling effect slightly weaker than that of a steel aged chard. The mid palate went by super fast and was fairly flat, but it more than made up for it with an exceptionally long and complex finish. I was genuinely surprised by this wine, since I expect pink wines to be either sugary and moscato-like or super dry. This was a wonderful off-dry, lightly sweet and tart when it needed to be, the kind of softer tart in nearly ripened blueberries rather than that of raspberries.
Very refreshing, and a great wine to drink chilled on warm evenings.
From the girlfriend:
It has that weird tart thing at the very end. I like how it’s not that dry. It drinks like a white wine, maybe because it’s not as dry.
We poured another glass and let it st for half an hour, and wow did it open up. Much stronger bouquet, no hint of alcohol smell. The flavors were all cranked up to 11, stronger fruit and acid, longer finish, still fairly flat in the middle but that’s not a bad thing. This wine went from good to very good with just a bit of time.
GF’s notes:
It’s not as tart towards the end, which is nice because then you just have that nice taste in your mouth with out that… acid?
Hi everyone! I am Tera Shannon the tasting room manager at Shannon Ridge. Please feel free to reach out with any questions and I’d be happy to answer them. I am looking forward to sipping on some of this 90 Point Pinot Noir Rose’ as it is going to be a beautiful weekend here in Lake County, CA Cheers!
@rtharak2 That is so nice of you. Unfortunately I live in the Richmond area and don’t routinely travel to northern Virginia. I wonder if @AlexNoVa is near you though. Perhaps you two would be able to split! Again, thanks so much for the offer. I really appreciate it.
Our Rosé has delicate aromas of strawberries, citrus, and violets. The crisp flavors are of raspberry, strawberry and fresh lemon zest. Best served chilled with good friends and sunny days.
Located in Lake County, California, known for the cleanest air quality in the United States you will find Vigilance Vineyards & Winery set amongst the historic Anderson Marsh sanctuary where preservation of the land and wildlife are equally matched to the beliefs of Clay Shannon, owner of this breathtaking slice of heaven. Inspiration came from the tranquil attributes of this exceptional property. It was the pivotal point of realization for the wine label “Vigilance”. Generated from their art of farming using sustainable practices and their spirit of being careful to preserve land for future generations the blend became a truly harmonious expression of the earth and the Shannon’s commitment to it. Enjoy!

@Rstoker Which is higher than the case price here,
and, does that include shipping?
Only if you have StewardShip.
$17.95 to ship three to SoCal.
And I can’t purchase more than four.
@Rstoker Correct, this is a $10 wine all day. No one paying $300 a case for this anywhere. The comp is way off. Look at the Vigilance wines at Binny’s, all around 10 bucks all day every day.
Pale copper hue, clear and short legs. A lighter and refreshing look. Served slightly chilled. Not a big nose, a quiet floral and light fruit bouquet. Tastes of spring sweetness, again light fruit and a pleasant creaminess and just slightly buttery. Some floral notes. Medium sweetness and some acid, light tannin. Grapefruit notes on the finish which is pretty long. I’m not a regular rose drinker but this hit the mark of my expectations and then some. I couldn’t guess at a price since popularity is booming now but with a warm southern breeze it feels good to hold and sip this evening.
Well, if you have a North Carolina Moscato Sweet Girl Friend and a very good free bottle of wine, I’d say you got yourself a WINNER!! Give her an A+ for stepping outside her comfort zone!!
Perfect timing. I’m down to 16 bottles of rosé and was wondering what I’d get before the weather starts warming up. I love Pinot Noir rosé (especially Navarro’s) and this looks like a great deal. I’m getting a case and I don’t need no mate (except my wife). Pork tenderloin, here we come!
@hey_zeus it’s not a white but it’s a rose? Whatcha think. Any dfw interest? Really only want a couple. Might just do a 3 pack
Just seems like a great summer sipper.
@neuroticsilence@LambruscoKid@cbrehman for that price, I’ll take 3 or 4. Plus I got to pick up my Harvey zin anyway. I got vmp if it’s my turn to pull the trigger, too
@cbrehman@mkenny2307@neuroticsilence I want it, but I have to say no. We just had some pretty sizeable unexpected expenses; I’ll be out of Casemates commission for a while, unfortunately. But I’m glad I saw this to remind me about that zin! I’ll shoot you an email in a sec.
Last night I opened a bottle of the 2016 from the last Woot offering to help me decide if I wanted in on this deal. This Rose it more full bodied than a French Rose, which I also happen to like. This was a nice sipper, and I remember it pairing well with some of our summer dishes, including grilled salmon and pork tenderloin.
With the way my family and friends go through Rose in the summer, a case fits the bill!

@rjquillin do we have a new rat picture? I just grabbed the pic from another thread.
@Cynamon well done!
This is the rat from when @snapster and @Winedavid49 launched the program on ww.

Just how does one sign up for this Lab Rat gig?
@mrn1 Good but not great.

@Cynamon @rjquillin the mods will actually add it if you don’t. They did for me.
Wine Enthusiast has just rated our 2017 Vigilance Pinot Noir Rose’ with 90 Points! Back to Back 90’s with our 2016 and now 2017.
