@chefjess@ScottW58
We are forcasted to have our first hard frost overnight. So I ended up spending several hours picking peppers and tomatoes from the garden. Here’s what I ended up with:
@kawichris650@ScottW58
Wow. That’s a lot of peppers and tomatoes. They look fantastic. How are you going store? Freeze? Can? Pickle? Salsa? Share with others?
@chefjess@kawichris650
Really nice! Funny a friend sent me a pic yesterday of his last pick of peppers and he said the same thing (frost overnight) he is in Iowa and makes my favorite hot sauce
@davirom@klezman@pjmartin
We visited Angel’s Envy, Woodford Reserve and Old Forester a few years ago and would recommend all of them - probably in the order listed. I targeted Angel’s Envy and they recommended Woodford who in turn recommended Old Forester (both at our prompting).
Made some Yorkshire pudding and sausage, sadly didn’t have a roast so no beef fat to cook the Yorkshire with Next time but used a bit of duck fat and it is friggin’ delicious if I don’t say so myself
@ScottW58 Those look good - known as Toad in the hole across the pond. My Mom (or Mum) used to make a large one with Lincolnshire sausage and cut it into portions - yum!
This is more advanced than I’d have thought and compared to 18 year old bottles of Corison. Cork was really crumbly - might have something to do with it. Nonetheless this is good stuff. Nice tertiary notes.
@rjquillin different lot than the one we split.
The beef was good. Quite comparable, IMO. But we inadvertently also tested the searing station on the new grill. This meat is too rich for it - too much incinerated fat that made less than ideal smoke.
2019 Winesmith Grenache with surf & turf: ribeye and shrimp scampi, steamed broccoli, and baked potato. SWMBO and I killed the bottle at one sitting, which is very unusual for us.
@ScottW58
Yes, sir. Robert brings in some interesting stuff. Both were bone dry. Cellar temp at 55F. Very tight on opening. Lots of minerality with both. Goldtropfchen was salty, bitter finish and the other was something else, maybe a little more herbal minerality. Both picked up lemon, pear, and a little grapefruit as they opened. Better as the evening progressed. I flip flopped on which I enjoyed more. I imagine these have a long life and will blossom with time. The Donnhoff was delicious. I’ve found the 2021 Kabs have some delightful acidity in terrific balance with the fruit. It’s going to be hard not to drink these early.
@ScottW58
The 2021 are fantastic and I’m having a hard time keeping my hands off. The Klamm was lovely; pear, peach, great acidity. Drank over two days and was great both days. I enjoyed the oberhauser leistenberg just a touch more than the NK, but they are both very enjoyable and should develop further.
The Tonschiefer was austere when first opened. Bone dry, closed, and just not a lot going on. I capped it, put back in the fridge, let it rest. Day 3 it was singing. Juicy!, definitely slate, nose of lemon and lime, great acidity, crisp. I’m tucking the rest away for a few years.
@chefjess@hscottk
What a great idea for a tasting! Love the Grace wines Shake Ridge and Beeson vineyards best, would love to know how the Keplinger is, I have been meaning to buy some but never got around to it for some reason?
@hscottk@ScottW58
The 2015 D&R and 2014 Keplinger were my favorites. Well integrated, not fruit bombs, filled the mouth with lush, if that makes sense. It’s the only keplinger I’ve tried and it was lovely. There were 6 of us, but interestingly none were able to find a common taste thread among the wines.
We had a great time. Every Wednesday evening should be this fun.
At the end of the evening I was volunteered to plan for the future tastings. Any suggestions on a theme that you’ve enjoyed?
@chefjess@hscottk
Two of my favorite tastings that we have done is 10 year retrospective so 2022 all wines 2012 or all wines from one producer, both can be helped by other people bringing like minded wines. Are you close to so cal? We could do some real damage seeing how you seem to like similar wines
@chefjess@ScottW58 yeah, I was among those who didn’t have much Napa cab, at least not of that price level.
But I’m game for any of these. I have a ton of 10 year old wines.
@klezman@ScottW58@hscottk
Great ideas. Keep them coming.
In St Louis so not close, but I can travel. I’ve never been to Napa wineries as I missed out on the rpm tours with scheduling conflicts. hoping that starts back up and I make it out. The falltacular last weekend would have been great but Larry’s nephews wedding killed it. We both would have preferred OC.
Our smaller group mid-week happy hour tastings (4p-6p) were my idea since we all usually have a lot of fun sharing a glass and 2 hours after work is not a big commitment. We meet at domaine in the lounge as several of us are clients. Our smaller group is varied with our ‘favorites’ but all still have a wide range we enjoy and have in our cellars. We have a French wine guy, a Riesling lover, an old Cali guy, Oregon lover, a deep/broad guy, and myself the champagne enthusiast. We all contributed to the Shake Ridge tasting with at least one bottle of what we already owned. The wine age was probably the biggest issue as that went from 2014 to 2019. I think most of our cellars go deep, but not in the same areas. I did throw out the possibility of each of us having a cellar tasting so pick 10 and this is your week, but I also like the idea of alternating with themes since we all like bringing something to share. Sometimes it’s a bottle that the owner has stored but yet to try so it’s a new experience all around. That actually might be a good theme. My preference is for folks to pull vs purchase. Grab a bottle from the collection and spend a few hours with friends. We all already have way too much wine and with shipping season in full force, the cellars runneth over.
@chefjess@hscottk@ScottW58 that sounds great!
If you ever make it to LA we’ll make sure pull some fun bottles and cook up a storm! Scott and I live pretty close to each other, too.
Marcella Hazan lemon roast chicken and did something different, parmesan garlic and Zatar crispy potatoes with chicken drippings fantastic! This is what chicken heaven is like
With fish and chips, the one great discovery we made on our trip to Sonoma/Napa. Yes it’s too lung but I wanted to make sure it was great at home and not because of the beautiful tasting room/surroundings enough fonts on the label to make you dizzy tho
shrimp pasta and
2014 WineSmith Pinot Gris Meador Estate
(flawed) cork intact, contents, not so much; ended up with
2017 Iron Horse Vineyards Unoaked Chardonnay
@hscottk@rjquillin I thought it was somewhere in the southeast, like TN. I don’t know if she’s making any more wine, but the website is still up. I’d happily take more at BD/WS/WD pricing. Especially the Bourriquot.
@hscottk@klezman@rjquillin
Pretty sure she went to Nashville with her boyfriend. She didn’t dropout her house, rental house and personal cellar went up in smoke in the Napa fires
@hscottk@rjquillin@ScottW58 Exactly. Not sure if she’s going to continue making anything else. I suspect dealing with the insurance may be a first step. And given how long I’ve been arguing with mine over a measly (to them) $1500 I can only imagine the argument she’s having…
A smattering of this and that, of which none of it paired well with a green chile stew. The Italian though was day two that was happy with last night’s ongoing Ooni learning curve…
@klezman
Okay I have the 15/17 and 18 and I paid $110 for them so 3 would equal $82.50 I will forget about the tax So you got a bottle that is worth around $82.50 or maybe 2 at the most that i might be interested in?
@ScottW58 I’ll have to think about it. I don’t have almost any bottles that expensive that I’d trade for these, so it’d be 2 $40ish bottles of I can find anything.
Last night we opened a bottle that’s been languishing on the wine rack in the living room of the country place for the last few years – 2013 Clayhouse Adobe White blend, a 2017 purchase from w.woot. I remember not liking it that much at the time, but it was pretty nice! And, we didn’t have any other white wine! In the discussion at the time, the winery rep said it was “an aromatic, crisp white wine with a light to medium body”, and I’d have to say it still met that description. Turned out to be pretty enjoyable.
Tonight, NV Dibon Brut Rose Cava. Lovely bubbles, an easy drinker, not much flavor though.
2013 Levet 3 days open and finally very drinkable. With a big ol BLT and avacado, Kaolis and syrah got me thinking about bacon I can definitely say hold these if you have any!
Opened a bottle of 2012 Harvest Moon RRV Zinfandel to find a leaky cork and oxidized wine. Bummer.
Replaced it with my last bottles of 2010 Cabot Syrah Klamath Cuvee. Killer deal at $15/bottle.
@rjquillin if they’re here then they’re buried in your locker. I doubt it’s a wine problem - this was clearly a cork issue since it leaked all the way up the side. I’ve never had that problem with Harvest Moon before, so I don’t think you need to worry.
The Cabot was great, as always. No need to rush but no need to wait, either.
Went with a campesino ‘21 Isa rose which was delicious.
Now my sous vide short ribs on the other hand came out so funky that we ended up with left over meat loaf. Which was fine BTW.
Ok, a little more sear on the scallops maybe but didn’t suck…
@karenhynes
I think Karen enjoys her Friday nights!
@ScottW58 That would be a fair statement.
The bosses birthday so a great champagne and she wanted turkey burgers sorry no way am I doing a pic of that!
@ScottW58
Nice. I really enjoy Paul Bara and that’s a great bottle
Morgan Ranch wagyu sirloin. Charred mixed peppers and shishitos. Sabelli-Frisch Luciades. Delicious!
@chefjess
Nice! Reminds me to grill some shishitos soon
@chefjess @ScottW58
We are forcasted to have our first hard frost overnight. So I ended up spending several hours picking peppers and tomatoes from the garden. Here’s what I ended up with:
7 lbs serrano
8 lbs Anaheim
9 lbs jalapeño
18 lbs habanero
30 lbs bell peppers
37 lbs tomatoes
Plus a smaller amount of cayenne and Hungarian wax peppers that I didn’t bother to weigh.
@kawichris650 @ScottW58
Wow. That’s a lot of peppers and tomatoes. They look fantastic. How are you going store? Freeze? Can? Pickle? Salsa? Share with others?
@chefjess
Thanks! I’ve already shared a bunch throughout the growing season.
I’ll be making a lot of salsa and hot sauce. The remainder will be frozen to preserve for later use during the winter months.
@chefjess @kawichris650
Really nice! Funny a friend sent me a pic yesterday of his last pick of peppers and he said the same thing (frost overnight) he is in Iowa and makes my favorite hot sauce
@chefjess @kawichris650 @ScottW58
Prime veggies I see!
@rjquillin
Fruits to be exact.
Well, I got 2 of them correctly oriented.
@karenhynes
Now that’s a great Friday night! Cheers
@karenhynes I almost always mess these things up. Nice evening.
@karenhynes
You just keep upping the Friday night game Karen
@karenhynes @ScottW58 Very nice! How is the Victory doing?
@ScottW58
Not quite a typical Friday night…
Tomorrow is one of my besties’ 60th B-day, so I pulled a couple of nice bottles. Went well with…
@hscottk @ScottW58
Victory is always delicious! I particularly noted some nice earthy, leathery, and peppery notes tonight. Fabulous with a steak!
I was slacking on Wednesday, so happy Friday!
@kawichris650 we opened a bottle of the 2012
The best Albarino I have had in forever, need to buy more! With a regular Morgan ranch carving roast I threw on the spit.
@ScottW58 that’s pretty.
@klezman @ScottW58 a few days late but that’s nice indeed
Not drinking them yet, but picked up some nice bottles during a couple of days on the KY Bourbon Trail.
@pjmartin Well, I’ve done the Fruit Loop outside of Hood River, OR but the Bourbon Trail offers whole other possibilities.
@davirom @pjmartin I’ll be in downtown Louisville soon for a conference - any suggestions for visits during my spare time?
@davirom @klezman Angel’s Envy is top of my list - but you need a reservation for a tasting or tour at most any place as the craze is not slowing.
@davirom @klezman @pjmartin
We visited Angel’s Envy, Woodford Reserve and Old Forester a few years ago and would recommend all of them - probably in the order listed. I targeted Angel’s Envy and they recommended Woodford who in turn recommended Old Forester (both at our prompting).
Wednesday on the weekend
2012 Wellington Vineyards Zinfandel Estate Vineyard
with Flannery August rich blend sliders
Made some Yorkshire pudding and sausage, sadly didn’t have a roast so no beef fat to cook the Yorkshire with Next time but used a bit of duck fat and it is friggin’ delicious if I don’t say so myself
@ScottW58 Impressive!
@danandlisa
Thanks coming from you that means a lot!
@ScottW58 You are too kind.
@ScottW58 we’ve always got plenty of beef fat around. Stop by any time and we’re happy to give you some.
@ScottW58 Those look good - known as Toad in the hole across the pond. My Mom (or Mum) used to make a large one with Lincolnshire sausage and cut it into portions - yum!
2018 iron horse vintage brut.
@karenhynes
Two bottles? pffftt
@ScottW58
I feel like I now have a Friday night reputation to defend.
Not a fan of Godfather, but younger granddaughter is in town with BF and it was their choice. $23 corkage reasonable.
2009 Vecchie Terre di Montefili Chianti Classico Riserva
2011 Accornero Barbera del Monferrato Superiore Bricco Battista
I liked the Barb better, but it had a bit too much funk for the others.
Doing a direct California Reserve vs Midwest comparison from Flannery. This should go well: 2004 Bell Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley
This is more advanced than I’d have thought and compared to 18 year old bottles of Corison. Cork was really crumbly - might have something to do with it. Nonetheless this is good stuff. Nice tertiary notes.
@klezman
These the ones from the K&L auction?
How was the beef?
@rjquillin different lot than the one we split.
The beef was good. Quite comparable, IMO. But we inadvertently also tested the searing station on the new grill. This meat is too rich for it - too much incinerated fat that made less than ideal smoke.
2019 Winesmith Grenache with surf & turf: ribeye and shrimp scampi, steamed broccoli, and baked potato. SWMBO and I killed the bottle at one sitting, which is very unusual for us.
After a great day of golf (shot 79) for an old f’er not bad so something good with pizza!
2012 Wellington Petit Verdot Sarlo Vineyard
@catcoland How is that doing? I still have one floating around.
@hscottk Just finishing it up on night two, definitely holding it’s own. I have 1 more, won’t be in a hurry to drink it.
Some new arrivals
@chefjess
Very nice how were those Kilburgs? Source material?
@ScottW58
Yes, sir. Robert brings in some interesting stuff. Both were bone dry. Cellar temp at 55F. Very tight on opening. Lots of minerality with both. Ohh talk to me
@ScottW58

Held up over a couple nights. Tonight with chicken scallopini. Very nice. A real value at $8.
@msten pretty happy with what I’ve bought so far
Been meaning to roast a chicken but just did some leftovers tonight, wine was great tho.
@ScottW58 That’s a great wine to have with leftovers!
@ctmariner
Indeed it was and what’s wrong with leftovers
@ScottW58 Nothing - I should have said a great wine with anything
Morgan tenderloin tips pile of green stuff and made some more Yorkshire pudding cause the boss loves them. And so do I!
Shake ridge tasting
@chefjess Now that’s what I call a party!
@chefjess @hscottk

@chefjess @klezman
Enjoyed that but hard to do unless you can get a group of people that can contribute unless you have a deep cellar.
@chefjess @ScottW58 yeah, I was among those who didn’t have much Napa cab, at least not of that price level.
But I’m game for any of these. I have a ton of 10 year old wines.

Getting an early start on younger daughter’s 45th.
Getting dark early…boo
@kaolis Looks tasty
@kaolis @rjquillin Agreed…that duck breast?
Daughter wanted to go to the game, who am I to say no so beer tonight!
With fish and chips, the one great discovery we made on our trip to Sonoma/Napa. Yes it’s too lung but I wanted to make sure it was great at home and not because of the beautiful tasting room/surroundings enough fonts on the label to make you dizzy tho
@ScottW58 Yeah, that’s a bit of a design nightmare. But who cares…it’s what’s in the bottle that counts!
Great friends and great wine.
2013 Engracia Pinot Noir Silva Vinyard
2009 Vincent Arroyo Petite Sirah, Napa Valley
Some burrata ravioli hiding in there… tasty wine not the best match but the bacon helped… I need a cellar reload
A wonderful bottle and I swear I can smell the volcanic rocks with tenderloin salad again.
@ScottW58 not too young?
@klezman
Everything can always get better or worse but it is delicious now! And I have more
Just a nice evening with this and some Veleta tuna, very happy!
2020 Jana Sauvignon Blanc with baked shrimp tomato and feta…
Forgot to mention I used a black garlic molasses as a binder for the spices, unbelievably delicious!
@kaolis
Wow never knew that existed?
@ScottW58 Fun stuff…'13 '14 '15 so far… somewhere between 90-150 bottles per release or something like that…I’m not worthy, ha!
@CorTot I guess you’re old when you remember visiting the winery?
@CorTot @kaolis Doesn’t that depend on how long ago you visited it?
@CorTot @klezman I don’t believe there has been a winery to visit for some time, just the brand. But I could be wrong
@CorTot @kaolis ah, now I understand what you meant!
Randomly pulled out a 2018 Pedroncelli Merlot.
Delish!
shrimp pasta and
2014 WineSmith Pinot Gris Meador Estate

2017 Iron Horse Vineyards Unoaked Chardonnay
@klezman
Well I have heard of Terre Rouge but that other one??
@ScottW58 Italian bubbly - all Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, champagne method. Zero dosage. Quite good. From garagiste.
Marion Cabernet Sauvignon, 2018. Bought it at the winery on Wednesday. Delicious, appassimento! Why don’t we use this method in the US?
2014 Campesino Grenache, Steel Plow vineyard. Went well with Chinese.
Went out for dinner last night and left the kids at home!
2001 Domaine Chante-Perdrix Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Leftover home dry aged beef rib roast and 2018 Turley Zinfandel Dogtown Vineyard
2010 Virage vineyards. Really enjoying these. Glad I went deep on the WS deal.
@hscottk Did she end up moving back to OH I think? Sad to see her totally drop out if that’s the case, or bottle…
@hscottk @rjquillin I thought it was somewhere in the southeast, like TN. I don’t know if she’s making any more wine, but the website is still up. I’d happily take more at BD/WS/WD pricing. Especially the Bourriquot.
@hscottk @klezman Ah, I think you are right on TN, but I’m not sure I’d call that in the southeast.
@hscottk @klezman @rjquillin TN is a bit of a hit-or-miss in lists/maps of the southeast states, but it tends be included.
@hscottk @Mark_L @rjquillin Rightly or wrongly I think most anything east of Texas is the southeast. Shrug. Not particularly important.
@hscottk @klezman @rjquillin
Pretty sure she went to Nashville with her boyfriend. She didn’t dropout her house, rental house and personal cellar went up in smoke in the Napa fires
@hscottk @rjquillin @ScottW58 Exactly. Not sure if she’s going to continue making anything else. I suspect dealing with the insurance may be a first step. And given how long I’ve been arguing with mine over a measly (to them) $1500 I can only imagine the argument she’s having…
Also took a trip to the Horse Heaven Hills. Solid bottle for $15.
In Louisville. Drinking bourbon. A flight of cask strength right now.
A smattering of this and that, of which none of it paired well with a green chile stew. The Italian though was day two that was happy with last night’s ongoing Ooni learning curve…
2016 Turley Zinfandel Cedarville, El Dorado County
2013 Peterson Winery Barbera La Stupenda
2015 Scott Harvey 1869 Zinfandel
Couple of the kids came over yesterday so burgers and wings. I like burgers and wings!
@ScottW58 and bubbles it would appear
@rjquillin @ScottW58 geezus we don’t drink enough bubbles…used to but got out of the “habit”…time to step up
@chefjess
Love this bottle
Bad take out… a little fried cod, a lot of fries (ok the fries are NOT bad) and a decent wine…
Decided to have a bonfire and some beer tonight.
Well shit, how did October happen already?!
@klezman
Right?! Summer went by far too quickly and we already have frost in forecast for the Twin Cities.
2016 Ser Cabernet Pfeffer
@klezman
What did you think? And if you like them I am willing to trade you mine for something else
@ScottW58 this one is nice. Light, peppery, red fruit, etc. This is more interesting than the 2015 vintage I tried a while back.
@klezman
So you will trade something/anything for mine?
@ScottW58 In principle, sure…I just have no idea what I’d trade. I’m sure we could work something out.
@klezman
Trader Joe’s brut rose to wind down a weekend.
Made a Picadillo that was good but needed more dried chorizo to balance the raisins IMHO. Wine was great!
@ScottW58 Just picked up a few of these (2018) on tso.
Pretty boring other than a nice sunset…
@kaolis waddaya want for $15?
@rjquillin better tonight. Haven’t bought much but zero complaints (on de Negoce purchases)
Last night we opened a bottle that’s been languishing on the wine rack in the living room of the country place for the last few years – 2013 Clayhouse Adobe White blend, a 2017 purchase from w.woot. 2011 tercero Cuvée Loco GSM
@Mark_L How is that? Drink now?
@hscottk @Mark_L
I hope not, looks like I still have an '09
@hscottk @rjquillin Drinking very nicely. Nothing to indicate a rush to open.
2013 Levet 3 days open and finally very drinkable. With a big ol BLT and avacado, Kaolis and syrah got me thinking about bacon I can definitely say hold these if you have any!
2016 Tercero Carignane
Opened a bottle of 2012 Harvest Moon RRV Zinfandel to find a leaky cork and oxidized wine. Bummer.
Replaced it with my last bottles of 2010 Cabot Syrah Klamath Cuvee. Killer deal at $15/bottle.
@klezman I don’t think I’ve ever seen Cabot reds at $15. Some special sale?
@hscottk ages ago, yeah. From the winery in 2016.
@klezman CT is suggesting I have a number (6?) of those up with you. Want to check out another bottle and lmk if yours was just a one-off?
The Cabot as well, with you. Need to hurry with them?
@rjquillin if they’re here then they’re buried in your locker. I doubt it’s a wine problem - this was clearly a cork issue since it leaked all the way up the side. I’ve never had that problem with Harvest Moon before, so I don’t think you need to worry.
The Cabot was great, as always. No need to rush but no need to wait, either.
Enjoying a Kir Royal using this stuff. Quite tasty.
Went with a campesino ‘21 Isa rose which was delicious.
Now my sous vide short ribs on the other hand came out so funky that we ended up with left over meat loaf. Which was fine BTW.
Kilkenny
I don’t understand why this isn’t available in the USA
Last night Cavatappi '13 San Pietro
2015 Corazon del Sol Luminoso GSM (Argentina) - yum.
On close-out at local wine store - should have picked up the other remaining bottle!
@ctmariner went back today and the remaining bottle was still there - excellent wine for $20 - pity there is no chance of getting anymore (I asked)
