@rjquillin yes, quite the contrast! The Opus One is a baby. But evolving nicely in the decanter.
The Corison is Corison. I’m the window I enjoy most (based off the 27 year tasting).
@ScottW58 meet up with friends in Paso Robles. Haven’t seen them since before the second kid came out. They brought the Opus.
We also drank a 2007 Winesmith Pinot, some Chardonnay, and I roasted some home aged rib roast. 71 days. Soft as butter. No funk at all.
@deadlyapp Haven’t had the wine, but that is my go-to corkscrew for popping corks. Came in a 6 pack in the WW days, but is basically the only one I use.
@deadlyapp@hscottk I use one like that from Rabbit, that I think was among the swag WD donated to a wine woot gathering back in the day.
Tonight, the 2nd night in a row with a screw cap, this time it’s 2019 Pink Agua by José Rosé. For some reason I’m not enjoying it as much as the first botle we opened, but it’s pleasant with a Thai dinner.
@deadlyapp I too had this…but with dinner tonight, Ahi tuna tacos and guac. I let out a laugh pouring it as it looked like hazy fruit juice. Your spot on with the sour beer comparison.
@rjquillin - Interested in your thoughts as well.
For me (tonight) it was just OK. I think it needs a bit more air time than I had the luxury of this evening. It’s good, and has a lot of promise, but seemed a bit tannic/edgy. My restaurant pals enjoyed it, but they enjoy everything I bring.
Mr. April refrained from drinking…I don’t think he had a valid ID.
@karenhynes It’s unusual I’ll pull a cork on a recent delivery, but I was curious and was having some meh red pasta that needed help; it pulled things together. I rather enjoyed the rustic fruit and tannic nature of it, and yes, it did improve a few days later. Perhaps I just wanted to like it for the Peter W. connection to Dick. Took the dregs, ~200ml, to my office mate that likes forward reds and he quite approved. He also really liked the OG N.100 from earlier still.
Mid twenties easily, but I’m a very poor judge of age.
@ScottW58
Saunter was very good, popped the cork and let it sit on counter for about 90 minutes - probably should have decanted. Its only going to get better over the next 5+years imho
With Salmon burgers @infrom burger looked so good I had to give it a try as for the wine damn I said God damn! This bottle needs to be on my last meal list.

@ctmariner Yeah, I know huh. Just unearthed a case that had five 2009 and 2010 vintages from that March 2014 woot; a bit over eight years ago now and doing quite well.
National rosé day isn’t until June 11th, but I threw caution to the wind. This is everything I want a rosé to be. What an amazing deal at $12 during their big sale.
One of those happy CT miscues, somehow I never logged in this 2008 Pedroncelli CS, Morris Fay vineyard. The cork was fragile, but the wine is still robust and in wonderful shape.

The twisted oaks were good but I guess I expected to be blown away by them based on comments here. Oh well.
Hadn’t opened one of the syrahs and was trying to determine whether or not to go in on today’s offer. The cab is lovely, but the syrah reminds me of sangria and has a bitter aftertaste so I’ll save the money.
@deadlyapp I too made a prior purchase, and don’t recall opening any. I’ll pop a couple and try 'em. I anticipate that I’ll be looking forward to another opportunity to buy.
@ScottW58
Pretty darn good for about 12.50/bottle, if I recall correctly. Pretty fruity, a little earthy. I didn’t realize when I broke into the case that it was a vertical offer (2017, -18, -19, -20) and the youngest vintage was the top layer. Normally I’d have grabbed the oldest first. Stay tuned for next week. I’ll have to flip the box over if I don’t get around to unpacking the box (which will, undoubtedly, be true).
@davirom@karenhynes@ScottW58 2017 Our Wines was just fine last night. It was my top layer so figured a good place to start. Wasn’t crazy good, but it was pop/pour and better after a couple of hours
@klezman remember when you were down here and we purchased boned legs? This one was one of those that was buried in the freezer from then.
No, not an Arcadian, but I still have leftovers and I’ll pull an '05.
Last night of Passover, matza lasagna in the oven. Opened my first bottle of 2017 Briamara Barbera Canavese Barbapreve from northern Piedmont. Initial tastes suggest this is great stuff - plenty of cherry/plum fruit and lots of chalky character.
@klezman@ScottW58 2014 was in prime secondary territory. I think 5-10 years after vintage is a good drinking window but off the truck can be pleasurable, particularly the appellation bottlings. Summa, Summa Old Vine and Occidental my favorites.
@FritzCat@rjquillin It is drinking very well, CT window seriously inaccurate. We had about 2/3rds of bottle last night and just put cork back in and left on counter till this evening… still very tasty. I would probably drink up over the next 2 - 3 years vs. 5 or 6 but still plenty of fruit flavors.
@rc70@rjquillin Thanks, I’ll try one tonight. From a long row of purple capsules, I first pulled a couple of '09 PVs than a PS and finally an '09 CS. That’s the ticket. We’ll see tonight.
Well tried one of the Kelley Fox Willamette blanc’s came out of the fridge ice cold bright acidity that was fantastic and kind of tasted like a still champagne, as it warmed I got all kind of flavors I really did not like at all? Can’t win them all. Moved on to a great wine imho.
@ScottW58 The ‘06 looks tasty.
When we remodel, remind me NOT to get that countertop that everyone else on casemates is showing.
BTW your wine cabinet is exquisite.
@ScottW58@ttboy23
Looked at different things over the years, but materials were a toss up, and places want to send in a designer? Don’t need a designer, just a damned countertop
A split of:
2002 Reserve Van Ruiten Vineyards
Late Harvest Zinfandel (Lodi)
First night it was thin and acidic.
A couple of days later and WOW, it has really come around. Very thick, rich, port-like.
I think this was another undergroundcellar grab - for some reason I have three bottles. Pretty good but not probably worth the $55 MSRP they tagged it with (surprise surprise)

@kaolis broccolini
The '04 was a bit rough at PnP, I read that was a ‘difficult’ vintage. My meager notes from a year ago were just ‘nice mature bottle’. Could have been the temperature, or bottle variation for this one, but I’d back that off a bit. Still have 1/2 bottle I’ll sip again tomorrow, with leftovers, with a fresh take after not cooking and tasting at the same time…
@kaolis So I revisited this tonight, same menu.
I’m back to the ‘nice mature bottle’ comment. Not a lot of fruit left, but what was there was, for me, nicely integrated with resolved tannins and medium acid. It’s showing it’s age nicely, and I’m happy to have another couple bottles acquired at $30, and wine searcher is claiming available now at $95 (ouch). Happy with two down, two to go.
@klezman
Delicious!! Exactly as an Eiswein should be—sweet, not cloying or sticky, nice acid. Great way to cap off a night. Glad I have 2 or 3 more bottles on the rack.
@hscottk
It was previously available on Amazon, but I just checked and it’s no longer showing up in the search results. So here’s a direct link to the manufacturer. They simply call it a wine filter pourer.
@davirom the nose is all Pinot honestly.
And the wine is a little thin and acidic for me. I’ll try the other 1/2 tonight with dinner and hopefully it’s better that way.
The Daou rose was also underwhelming. We prefer more of juicy profile not the more minimalist white wine with a tinge of pink that this one is. Got 11 more of them. That is the downside to casemates you can end up with a whole case of wine you don’t love.
Let me tell you how I got into wine. At Grape Creek Wine Cellar in Fredericksburg, I tasted Tuscan-style wine. There was a romantic Italian tasting room in the villa. The 100-acre winery produces excellent wine. Found over 3000 wine offers on the website and decided to tour some locations. Take a streetcar ride through the picturesque estate, where lush oaks are overgrown with vines. Take one of their cellar tours for barrel tastings at their new state-of-the-art winery complex. Try any 14 varieties and blends, including Viognier with honey and fruit and a bold and spicy blend of Sangiovese.
With home dry aged rib roast. Yum.
@klezman Quite the lineup!
@klezman How’s that '03, like I really need to ask…?
I can only imagine the contrast between the two.
@rjquillin yes, quite the contrast! The Opus One is a baby. But evolving nicely in the decanter.
The Corison is Corison. I’m the window I enjoy most (based off the 27 year tasting).
@rjquillin and we also just opened 2007 Winesmith Pinot Noir.
@klezman
Nice! Something special going on to open a Corison and a young Opus? or just sounded good
@ScottW58 meet up with friends in Paso Robles. Haven’t seen them since before the second kid came out. They brought the Opus.

@catcoland Still great on night 2.
@catcoland I was going to ask how it was.
Nice to see older vintages showing up here.
I’m calling today Scott Sunday lol. Cheers!
Man, this is a weird one. More like a sour beer than a wine! Can’t stop drinking it though!
@deadlyapp Haven’t had the wine, but that is my go-to corkscrew for popping corks. Came in a 6 pack in the WW days, but is basically the only one I use.
@hscottk I have 6 or some crazy number that I got through various cases, all casemates branded. They are some of the best ones I’ve used and my go-to.
@deadlyapp @hscottk I use one like that from Rabbit, that I think was among the swag WD donated to a wine woot gathering back in the day.
@deadlyapp @TechnoViking if it’s like a sour beer I’ll be much pleased!

@karenhynes Thoughts?
same one I opened earlier this week.
No Mr. March, and here it is April…
@karenhynes @rjquillin yah, how is it?!
@rjquillin - Interested in your thoughts as well.

With a roasted chicken my gateway drug a few years ago.
Happy Wellington Wednesday!
I’m so glad I still have some of these. Either I forgot just how good they are, or perhaps they are continuing to get better with age.
@kawichris650
Both!
With Flannery NY, life is good and almost normal these days.May it continue onward.
@rc70 A decade apart. Those Ardente were a steal!
@rc70 @rjquillin hope you are doing well Fredsaidcab wherever you are

Pretty sure $60 per doesn’t qualify as baller? Now if you saw my purchase last week… Well yeah
@ScottW58 Ok marginal
It’s a buck and a half on CT.
@rjquillin
Lol well I’m glad I bought on release then!
@ScottW58 That was a damn good salmon burger, now that you mention it. Tried the ones from Wegman’s a couple of weeks ago, not nearly as good.
What I can’t get at the supermarket is that cozy Berkshires feeling. Wish I were up there right now.

@FritzCat what vintage? I am sitting on a 2017.
@ctmariner This was the '17. Also have an '18, but I thought I should drink them in order.

Making room for this year’s BD Loring order. It’s a tough job, but…
@CorTot You kill your earlier vintage bottles?
This, or those, ready or past due?
@rjquillin I had 1 2014 which was solid and this my 2nd of 4 2015s. Haven’t tried it yet. Still a little to chilly from the cooler.
@rjquillin having tried it now, it’s fairly bretty. Not terrible but pretty noticeable.

@ScottW58 The ‘06 looks tasty.
When we remodel, remind me NOT to get that countertop that everyone else on casemates is showing.
BTW your wine cabinet is exquisite.
@ttboy23
Lol! I’m not a fan of the counter top either
@ScottW58 @ttboy23
Counter top looks a lot better than the one I have in Ohio; Formica on particle board.
Feel like doing a John Candy model representation of it, like with the watch and shower curtain rings in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.
It goes back, but I really do need to address this.
@CroutonOllie @ScottW58 yah, Formica, like ours from ‘94 but if I tipped over a glass it would have a chance of survival. The granite, highly doubtful
@ScottW58 @ttboy23
Looked at different things over the years, but materials were a toss up, and places want to send in a designer? Don’t need a designer, just a damned countertop
@ScottW58 @ttboy23 Is the wine cabinet a Le Cache?
@ctmariner @ttboy23
Yes sir
@ScottW58 @ttboy23 Nice - I have the half sized version (along with a similar capacity Eurocave in the basement)
2014 Tognetti Family Winery Chardonnay Aloise Francisco Vineyards

2014 Iron Horse Vineyards Chardonnay Estate
Just wanted to post a pic of something I’ve already posted in another thread.
If you have an issue, you know it, otherwise:
2020 Campesino Isa rosé. The warmth was fun while it lasted.
Catch up from the last few nights.
Second seder last night, with turkey and flour- and dairy-free gravy and a delicious carrot soufflée:
NV Vazart-Coquart Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Réserve Brut
2016 Tzuba Cabernet Sauvignon
2014 Covalli Barolo
2016 Harvest Moon Zinfandel Single Vineyard Pitts Home Ranch Estate
2004 Château Faugères
Lamb, beets, turnip, carrots, green stuff and fresh rosemary bread.
@rjquillin I’d ask you how the green stuff was, but how was the ‘04?
@kaolis broccolini
Chicken leg quarters and an Arcadian.
2008 Pra’ Amarone
Some inexpensive Amarone, 16.5%
Oh! in the $60+ range, per CT
Delicious
2012 E Maria Gerhardt Spatburgunder Rose Eiswein
@karenhynes ooooh… Tell me more
@klezman
Delicious!! Exactly as an Eiswein should be—sweet, not cloying or sticky, nice acid. Great way to cap off a night. Glad I have 2 or 3 more bottles on the rack.
@karenhynes sounds great!
Made some Guinness lamb stew with the leg leftovers, with, for science, to see how it may do in the cellar
2016 Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve
Sediment aside, this is drinking beautifully. I’m glad I have some of these…
@kawichris650 What is that called and where did you get it?
@hscottk
It was previously available on Amazon, but I just checked and it’s no longer showing up in the search results. So here’s a direct link to the manufacturer. They simply call it a wine filter pourer.
https://www.franmara.com/index.php/wine-accessories/wine-filter-pourer
@hscottk @kawichris650
Sure looks like a fuel filter to me.
We buy from here frequently.

@rjquillin
If the Franmara is a fuel filter, then perhaps a wine fueled vehicle is next on the horizon?
Yeah I can see the resemblance. Here is a petcock fuel filter for a dirt bike I have.
@kawichris650 @rjquillin Thanks, guys!
@CorTot part of our split?
Not opened any yet, good time to do so?
@rjquillin yes.
I’d say they are good to go.
Plenty fruity still and showing some nice age.
Crabbie, cakes and stuffed mushrooms, and other stuff
NV Furthermore Pinot Noir Blanc de Noir
I have two of these, not sure where they came from. Pretty pleasing and probably right at the peak of its drinking window or close to it.
Some weird Crown Royal Peach Whiskey, along with various other things. Not bad, but more a Port type of thing, though a bit stronger.
@CorTot We had a bottle of the K syrah last week. I hope the grenache is better. (Could not resist K syrah, but next time we will.)
2020 Whistling Ridge Blanc
With leftover turkey and such
@klezman
Did you like it?
@ScottW58 Even this yak palate loved it
@klezman
Glad to hear, I loved it too.
de Négoce OG n.220, Walla Walla Sauv Blanc / Semillon. Good but much better at room temp than chilled.
Burger and salad. First really warm day we’ve had this spring
@chefjess
Just realized that pic is awful. Myriad Semillon McGah Family Vineyard. Refreshing on a warm evening
@chefjess
The warm day comment made me think of mosquitos and Raid.
@rjquillin
Ha! Not yet, but it’s coming. Temps go back down next week so we have a little time before citronella and deep woods off fill the air.
Found this in the cellar and it’s damn nice! With sausage ragu. And I get to support higher education
@ScottW58 I thought about buying that and foolishly balked at the (what I now realize was a modest) price point. How is it?
@klezman
It’s very nice, the only thing is that tannins are still a few years from balancing out. Glad I have one more
2016 Ernest Vineyards Pinot Noir The Engineer Romanini Vineyard
Switching things up tonight. I was slightly concerned about the age on this, but it’s drinking very well.
2015 Black Kite Redwoods Edge Pinot Noir. I expected this to be pretty good based on other notes, but I was pretty disappointed in how it showed.
2012 Hand of God Malbec.
Like no other Malbec I’ve had.
Very good on 2nd day.
@FritzCat four on CT, which one?
@rjquillin Old Vine Stolen Horse Vineyard.
2007 Gardet champagne prestige cuvée Charles
NV Frederiksdal Gods Cherry Sur Lie
Damn this is good
@klezman That sounds very interesting!
@klezman K&L got any left?
@rjquillin Looks like it’s all sold out
Let me tell you how I got into wine.

@rjquillin Cleanup on Aisle 5! Despite the inviting image of a villa with a romantic Italian tasting room. (And who’s that Italian?)
@InFrom let’s have some fun
@InFrom @rjquillin
@InFrom @pseudogourmet98 @rjquillin I’m sad that I missed what the original post said
@deadlyapp @InFrom @pseudogourmet98
just a now removed link
@deadlyapp That’s the original post, minus the linky
@karenhynes
Drinking past memories?
Musta been really good ones…
@rjquillin Always good x2!!
@karenhynes @rjquillin
I knew that was bound to happen with as many times as this thread kept getting bumped.
@kawichris650 @rjquillin
Apparently I need to move that when I get home.
@karenhynes
Dining with Mr July?
Lucky guy with those bottles.
