Do you have any Verdejo? If not, maybe a Viognier or Sauv Blanc. Or if you want to highlight the coconut instead of the key lime, you could try a buttery chard or full bodied white like a Wellington Roussanne.

Yup. Pinot Noir is my go-to with grilled salmon. I’ve been trying some other reds with fish/seafood, but this is my favorite pairing.

On May 2nd, our daughters treated SWMBO and I to an online tasting by Frog’s Leap (tourists from the 2008 rpm Magical History Tour may remember visiting) of their Merlot. 2013, 2003 and, optionally 1993. We didn’t do the 1993. Both wines were excellent examples of Napa Valley Merlot made by someone who understands the grape and makes it taste like wine… The 2013 looks to have another 10-15 years life in it. Very solid, well balanced wine, still significant fruit, and rather closed to start, but nice structure. The 2003 was much more about bottle bouquet. Bordeaux-like aroma complexity and very nice flavors, with good fruit. The middle palate showed some flabbiness (they called it “roundness” when I commented on it online ) and my sense was that the acid/tannin balance in the finish was tending a bit more towards acid. In short, a wine at or very near peak to drink over the next year or three, but not a 25-30 year wine. Wish I’d tasted the 1993 for comparison (as they said that was still nicely alive), but the grapes weren’t from the same vineyard as they used for both the 2003 and 2013.
Over the weekend…
2018 St. Supery Sauvignon Blanc with Gulf of Maine grilled salmon, pecan basmati, green beans and dill sauce.
Also finished up a 2013 WineSmith Cabernet Sauvignon that went surprisingly well with a caramel sundae and had some 2013 Weinkellerei Hugl-Wimmer Grüner Veltliner w/buttered popcorn at the drive-in.

Ravings? Haha, I have certainly promoted its use a number of times so I guess that’s not unfair. I’ve gone through a couple dozen of them because I end up giving them away all the time to people who are impressed with the amount of sediment they trap.
But yes, the mesh screen is only so fine and the smallest grains of sediment do get through. I usually try to be careful not to tip the bottle too much on that last pour for that very reason. Better to leave a few drops in the bottle than get a mouthful of sediment on the last sip. If there is a filtered pour spout that does a better job, I would love to know about it!
@chipgreen I did notice that the bottom of the spout has a small unfiltered opening. Perhaps I’ll try some means to block it and see if that might help.

@rjquillin I think I bought the Merlot rather than the Tempranillo. Whichever it was, unfortunately it predated my entry into using CT. I guess I could page through all my Woot purchases… or not. Definitely not.

Need to drink away the frustration of Casemates again shipping on a Friday, on the hottest weekend so far this year…Good reminder of why I’ve cut back drastically. They used to have this shipping thing handled like a boss and now it seems to always be the worst possible timing.
@trifecta I received my ship notice for the Scott Harvey today, showing delivery for Tuesday which means its sitting somewhere hot over the weekend as it only takes two days to arrive. If they had shipped Monday it would be delivered Wednesday, basically moving the whole time.

Will probably sit in Lathrop heat for a day or two before moving up the I5 corridor. One can only hope they bring it indoors in Lathrop, where it will be 95F today and 87F tomorrow.

Drinking very well but certainly can go for years. Blueberry, black fruit nose, tannin’s very well integrated.
I’m not going to drink up my remaining bottles anytime soon, (4 left) but will probably pull one every 12 - 18 months.
@rjquillin It was very good. Tasted young, rather old-world, bright with plenty of acidity. Drinking the other half tonight. Wait a sec. Great nose today, still bright, a little more depth today. I’d drink one of the '06s. I was going to pull out a Turley cab, but decided that I wanted something more ‘classic’.

@hscottk It was good. Certainly younger, went through some more open and some more closed phases over the evening. About 1/3 is left for tonight. I ended up with 5 bottles, otherwise I wouldn’t have opened one up so young. These are built to age nicely.

I think these are little older than optimal for Turley. Seems that 7-12 years hits the right balance of fruit and complexity. At least with the older winemaking regime - maybe Tegan’s influence has things being more ageable now.

It’s a Vega project in a more modern style, I think they use more french oak than American oak in this but I’m loving it! Valbuena is the second wine.

Well considering a lot of people will tell you not to touch Vega Unico for 20 or 30 years from vintage not sure how modern that is? Maybe because they are from Ribera del Duero and they use American oak like everyone in Spain some people feel they are modern?
@klezman I opened my only bottle of this over the past weekend, and was greeted with a sour smelling cork, and a wine that tasted like a wet paper towel. Very sad, as it went down the drain…then opened a very nice '12 Wellington Petit Verdot to cleanse the palate, which was quite enjoyable (last of those, as well).
@CObrent This is my only bottle - I decided to open this one younger rather than go in on my 2010/11s.
This is not corked or turned to vinegar. This is deliciousness.
Got a couple hundred Wellingtons to tide me over for the next decade plus.

2014 Bridge 1904 Cabernet Sauvignon. Had a 2013 a few days ago and am a bit let down by both. Removed the remaining bottles out of my “preferred” (temperature controlled) storage into my basement locker and moved some bottles that I am enjoying more (Two Jakes Aspects meritage) into the preferred storage.

Well, I was really hoping this would be my summer porch/balcony wine, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case (pun intended!). I remember tasting it when I bought it and thinking it was oddly herbal. I hoped it was just on an “awkward” phase, but it’s still odd. At this point, I can say it has a “nose” but I can’t identify any component of it. Same for the palate. I’m confounded. I want to love it (it’s WineSmith!)…but I don’t. Pedroncelli to the rescue!?

2016 Cabot Vineyards Zinfandel Marier Vineyard
Own-rooted, planted 2005, Cabot’s estate vineyard. This is fantastic. After hating Zinfandels for so long, turns out that there have been producers all along making lower alcohol Zin-based wines of place: Scott Harvey, Turley (sometimes), Cabot, Harvest Moon, Easton, Once&Future, Ridge, Briceland, and maybe Bedrock.
@trifecta That’s a tough one, the two blondes was sooo young but had all the parts I look for in a great cab. The Goat also had tons of structure but was super delicious at this young age, both needed a really long decant. So I guess I will go with the Goat right now IMHO this is some great wine making and hopefully they survive these crappy times!
Surprise sushi with 2013 Chester’s Anvil Hattori Hanzo, originally meant for Flannery hanger steak leftovers. Not the best pairing, but enjoyed nonetheless.
@ScottW58 It was tasty but could still use more time in the bottle. Good structure but still has a few rough edges that work better with steak than sushi! A steal at $15.

2012 Wellington Mohrhardt Ridge Cab over a couple nights with a couple rich beef tenderloin dishes. Down to the last 47 bottles of Wellington
With pasta Carbonera and yes the Durand worked flawlessly again
BTW this is really a great cab that probably has a decade or more life left imho.

Need to drink away the frustration of Casemates again shipping on a Friday, on the hottest weekend so far this year…Good reminder of why I’ve cut back drastically. They used to have this shipping thing handled like a boss and now it seems to always be the worst possible timing.
@trifecta I received my ship notice for the Scott Harvey today, showing delivery for Tuesday which means its sitting somewhere hot over the weekend as it only takes two days to arrive. If they had shipped Monday it would be delivered Wednesday, basically moving the whole time.

Will probably sit in Lathrop heat for a day or two before moving up the I5 corridor. One can only hope they bring it indoors in Lathrop, where it will be 95F today and 87F tomorrow.

I’m not going to drink up my remaining bottles anytime soon, (4 left) but will probably pull one every 12 - 18 months.

@rjquillin It was very good. Tasted young, rather old-world, bright with plenty of acidity. Drinking the other half tonight. Wait a sec. Great nose today, still bright, a little more depth today. I’d drink one of the '06s. I was going to pull out a Turley cab, but decided that I wanted something more ‘classic’.
@FritzCat @rjquillin Ron, you have the 2006 Montelena Estate Cab, I think, as I do. I think the drinking window might be slightly later on it vs the Napa Valley.

@hscottk It was good. Certainly younger, went through some more open and some more closed phases over the evening. About 1/3 is left for tonight. I ended up with 5 bottles, otherwise I wouldn’t have opened one up so young. These are built to age nicely.

I really dig these Bedrock heritage zins probably because they are really more of a field blend more that a straight zin. This one just fell of the truck last week

It’s a Vega project in a more modern style, I think they use more french oak than American oak in this but I’m loving it! Valbuena is the second wine.

Well considering a lot of people will tell you not to touch Vega Unico for 20 or 30 years from vintage not sure how modern that is? Maybe because they are from Ribera del Duero and they use American oak like everyone in Spain some people feel they are modern?

@klezman I opened my only bottle of this over the past weekend, and was greeted with a sour smelling cork, and a wine that tasted like a wet paper towel. Very sad, as it went down the drain…then opened a very nice '12 Wellington Petit Verdot to cleanse the palate, which was quite enjoyable (last of those, as well).
@CObrent This is my only bottle - I decided to open this one younger rather than go in on my 2010/11s.
This is not corked or turned to vinegar. This is deliciousness.
Got a couple hundred Wellingtons to tide me over for the next decade plus.

Well, I was really hoping this would be my summer porch/balcony wine, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case (pun intended!). I remember tasting it when I bought it and thinking it was oddly herbal. I hoped it was just on an “awkward” phase, but it’s still odd. At this point, I can say it has a “nose” but I can’t identify any component of it. Same for the palate. I’m confounded. I want to love it (it’s WineSmith!)…but I don’t. Pedroncelli to the rescue!?

Own-rooted, planted 2005, Cabot’s estate vineyard. This is fantastic. After hating Zinfandels for so long, turns out that there have been producers all along making lower alcohol Zin-based wines of place: Scott Harvey, Turley (sometimes), Cabot, Harvest Moon, Easton, Once&Future, Ridge, Briceland, and maybe Bedrock.
With BBQ chicken sandwiches, 15 JB Neufeld Old Goat cab, really enjoying trying these bottles!
