THAT REMINDS ME OF: The humble bento box. Which I realize is pretty funny immediately following a recommendation of an Italian meal.

Basically a Japanese lunchbox, though versions of it exist all around East/Southeast Asia. Take some rice or noodles, maybe add a little something to it. Put it in one compartment. Next, get some fish or chicken, prepared however you want, put it in another compartment. Then get some vegetables in there for good measure. Maybe egg, seaweed, some sauce you can put on one or multiple items. A lot of the components can be eaten on their own or mixed together.

Since everything goes together in a single, contained box, people get creative with presentation and ideas. They make pictures out of the contents. They’ll make themed bentos. There are all kinds of specialty containers with different layouts and functions.
