The Crocodile Dundee Hills

TASTING NOTES: “Sourcing 2022 vintage fruit from the Dundee Hills AVA and aging the wine in French oak for over a year, Alesong’s first Pinot Noir is refined and food-friendly, with mild acidity and notes of delicate berry and spice, characteristic of the Dundee terroir. Like all Alesong beverages, the wine reflects the patient and artistic approach that defines Alesong’s craft.” (AbV 12.6%)

VARIETALS: Pinot Noir.

BARRELS: French oak.

PAIRS WITH: Duck liver mousse, chanterelle mushroom and roasted garlic pasta, lamb burger with blue cheese, chocolate truffle with ginger and fig.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Crocodile Dundee. Which apparently they just rereleased this January.

Paul Hogan plays Michael “Crocodile” Dundee, a living vessel for every Australian stereotype. He is a rugged and uncouth outdoorsman who wrestles crocodiles, kills snakes with his bare hands, is a bit of a chauvinist, all that jazz. Reporter from New York Sue Charlton, who is already in a relationship with her editor, goes to Australia to interview Dundee about losing his leg to a crocodile.

He did not, in fact, lose his leg, though it left quite a scar. Sue travels the outback with Dundee, witnesses him doing all sorts of impressive feats, and after Dundee saves her from a crocodile, starts to catch feelings for him. She returns to New York and invites him along to “finish the feature story,” whereupon arrival he does more buff Australian guy things to the locals. But uh-oh, Sue’s hoity-toity family have a dinner where her crappy editor boyfriend proposed! And she said yes!? How could this possibly resolve? You can probably guess for the most part, though the way it’s done is… novel, at least.

Listen, if someone stepped on my head in a subway station, after they’d been walking around in New York City, I’m starting a fight. I don’t care how buff or Australian he is.
