Nero d’Avalon

TASTING NOTES: “The abundance of black cherry and dark plum dominate this wine. The fruit is forward and subtly supported by some oak and bright acidity. The tannins are plush but relatively soft, offering a wine for many occasions which will pair with a wide array of foods as well as an enjoyable drink on its own. The variety has an outstanding future ahead of it in Paso Robles.” (AbV 14.9%, pH 3.59, TA 6.4 g/L, RS 3.5g/L)

VARIETALS: Nero d’Avola.

BARRELS: 9 months in French and American oak.

PAIRS WITH: “A wide array of foods.” So you’re probably safe with most red wine fare.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Avalon. Not that I’ve ever been. I hear the weather is lovely, though.

No, Avalon is not a real place. In Arthurian legend, it is an isle belonging to the fey and/or sorceresses like Morgan le Fey where many have said Arthur’s body was taken to rest. There he either rules or lays buried to this day. Or so the tales go. It likely got its name from having apple trees. Apple-on, if you will.

People tried to identify or locate Avalon and Arthur’s remains for quite some time. Some kings even used the promise of finding Arthur’s location as a bit of propaganda. Monks of Glastonbury Abbey claimed famously to have found a coffin inscribed with “Here lies entombed the renowned King Arthur in the island of Avalon” or something in the late 12th century. Turns out Glastonbury even used to be surrounded by water. Some claim it was an attempt by the monks to fundraise for their recently burnt down abbey, which is fair. Nonetheless, Glastonbury remains popularly associated with Avalon and Arthur.

Relevant in particular to today’s wine, people had even speculated at points that Sicily was Avalon. The name Nero d’Avola comes from Avola on Sicily.
