TASTING NOTES: “This wine starts with aromas of white peach, white and yellow flowers lychee, blanched almonds, lemon curd and lemongrass. The palate is nicely balanced with fruit, good texture, and bright minerality. The white peach nectar notes dominate but are balanced with lime zest and some orange zest notes as well. The finish is white rocks, lemon and lime zest and creamy orange curd.“ (AbV 12%)

BARRELS: 6 months of aging on lees, 4 months in concrete and neutral French oak.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: CAST. Sorry, “cast.”

Interesting word, when you think about it. Cast can mean throwing something. It can mean molding something. It can mean giving actors roles in a theatrical production. It can mean plastering your arm when it’s broken. And it all comes from one place, so it isn’t some sort of convergence of words from different languages into a single English spelling or a coincidental homonyms situation. All of it comes from the Old Norse kasta, meaning “to throw.” So how did we get from throwing to casting roles and casting metals?

Well, in a sense, when you are giving people parts in a production, you are tossing them a role, I guess. And from the verb “cast” sticking in that context, the noun version to refer to the players in the play came about. As for casting metals, I’m not entirely sure. You are maybe throwing molten metal into a mold, in a manner, and once again, the noun referring to the thing that shapes it was a consequence of the verb? English is weird.
