TASTING NOTES: “The 2019 Dante Merlot is a bright and expressive wine straight from the start. Charming aromas of cherry, creme de caramel, and richly toasted oak leap from the glass. In the mouth, the wine is juicy and ripe, with flavors of cherry, plum, and blackberry mingling with the sweet spiciness of French oak. The lengthy finish is perfumed with Tahitian vanilla and cinnamon.” (AbV 13.5%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The strange Catholic self-insert fan fiction that is the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri.

Okay, maybe it isn’t exactly fan fiction. This isn’t like Fifty Shades vs. Twilight. But Dante describes himself journeying through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, interacting with and guided by various historical and biblical figures. He even uses a fictional version of a woman he once knew as one of the guides. She died in 1290, however, so it at least makes sense to include her in the afterlife.

Dante is first guided through nine circles of Hell by the poet Virgil, then through the seven terraces of Purgatory Mountain by Beatrice, and finally through nine spheres of Heaven.
