TASTING NOTES: “The 2021 Dante California Pinot Noir opens with raspberry, yellow plum, and a hint of dried cranberry. In the mouth, the wine is juicy with generous flavors of red and yellow plum, rose petals, and cardamom, with French vanilla bean lingering on the lengthy finish.” (AbV 13.5%)

VARIETALS: Pinot Noir.

BARRELS: 18 months in oak.

PAIRS WITH: Pan-seared sea scallops, served with garlic-tossed linguine and sautéed broccolini.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The madness that is all the different terms used to describe how fast music should go.

Before people were using beats per minute (bpm) to determine tempo, composers would just write a word at the top of the score and the conductor would just kinda go off vibes. For instance:

Grave, Largo, and Adagio were often the slowest. Lento is pretty slow too, but maybe not as much. Andante is “a walking pace,” assuming you walk rather leisurely. Moderato is a “moderate” speed, but when everything is subjective, it’s hard to know exactly what moderate is. Allegro is fast, and that’s simple enough. Something like Allegretto might be slower than Allegro, although something like Larghetto might be faster than Largo. Sometimes things are Vivace, which means lively, and people think that means faster than just fast. Then, of course, we have our dear friend Presto from a couple weeks back for something very fast.
