White Mount Rex

TASTING NOTES: “The 2021 White Rex is a vibrant and layered white blend that captures the best of its varietals. On the nose, delicate aromas of honeysuckle, peaches, and a hint of melon invite you in. On the palate, this wine strikes a beautiful balance between bright acidity and a smooth, rounded texture. The Chardonnay brings creamy apple and subtle oak, the Sauvignon Blanc lends zesty lime and grapefruit, and the Roussanne adds an exotic note of honeydew and peaches.

The finish is crisp yet lingering, with a touch of minerality and a whisper of spice, making it both refreshing and complex.” (AbV 12.7%, RS 0.4 g/L)

VARIETALS: 66% Sauvignon Blanc, 23% Roussanne, 11% Chardonnay

PAIRS WITH: Seafood dishes like grilled scallops or oysters, creamy pastas, roast chicken, or a fresh summer salad with goat cheese and citrus vinaigrette.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Mount Rex.

Antarctica. A lot of big, white expanses down there. But lo, there are things that sometimes break up that expanse! Some of these “things” are geological features known as nunataks. A nunatak is what happens when an ice field or glacier creeps so far up a mountain that all you can see is the peak. The word is taken from the Inuit language Kalaallisut, who were native to Greenland. So, if all that ice were to melt away, you’d have a whole mountain there.

Now, I’m not really clear on whether Mount Rex is a nunatak or not. I mean, for one they call it Mount Rex and not Rex Nunatak. Located at 74°54′S 75°57′W, it’s described as an isolated mountain 3,625 ft high. I’m guessing much of that is under the ice sheet, though, since it doesn’t exactly show up as a typical mountain on maps. Not much info on it. Perhaps in time we’ll know more?
