About Handal-Denier Vineyards: “Our winemaking is a relatively recent venture. For over twenty years we were primarily grape growers selling our premium grapes to some of the best wineries in Sonoma and Napa counties with whom we have long standing relationships…. Though we no longer farm our own grapes we continue to consult for the family that purchased our vineyard in Dry Creek Valley from which we continue to make our Cabernet Sauvignon and Sagrantino wines.”

TASTING NOTES: “This wine has aged well and the flavors are just now, six years later, truly shining. Deep luscious black fruits shine alongside hints of cocoa, spices including black pepper and tobacco. This is a deep rich velvety wine that has aged quite well.” (AbV 14-14.2%, pH 3.24, RS < 0.1%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Dinner.

Not what I’m having for dinner. About dinner as a word and I guess a concept. Where did that come from?

Well confusingly, it means breakfast. Seriously. When you trace it back to the etymological root, you get to the Latin disieiunare, which literally translates to “stop fasting.” Because as it turns out, dinner does not refer to when you eat the meal, but the nature of the meal itself.

For much of history, dinner has referred to the largest meal of the day. It wasn’t until the late 19th century that having dinner in the evening became popular beyond certain groups. Several centuries had dinner in the morning. Gradually it moved to midday, around noon and slightly later particularly in the 18th century. It wasn’t until the French nobility moved it to the late afternoon due to scheduling conflicts that it started to become an evening thing.
