About Bodega Calle: “Christopher Ermisch was the original founder of Bodega Calle, along with Elvira Calle, a well-known local businesswoman and philanthropist and the original owner of Mendoza’s Los Andes newspaper. The original brand was named ‘Alberti 154′ as it is the address of the winery in the district of Lújan de Cuyo. Dating to 1925, it resides on what’s now on a residential street on the corner of 3 other founding wineries of this classic zone named Drummond. A small-lot, gravity-flow, red wine production studio, Bodega Calle places great emphasis on gently crafting wines with regional distinction and grand personality.”

WINE NOTES: “Dharma is all about the natural essence of wine made with the most natural processes possible. Grapes are organically farmed. The winery is organically certified and all grapes are delivered to the tanks via gravity and fermented with native yeast. The wine is vegan in that no animal products were used in any part of the winemaking process. GMO free. Single Vineyard. The wine was meticulously cellared for 12 months in second and third use French oak barrels then blended and bottled. Aged at least one year before release.” (AbV 13.5%, pH 3.8, TA 5.17 g/L, RS 2.25 g/L)

VARIETALS: 60% Malbec, 40% Cabernet Franc

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Dharma.

Not with regard to this wine, but the concept. Stemming from, appropriately, Dharmic religions or Indian religions, Dharma is complex. The most general way to describe it would be necessary or right actions. It is behavior that prevents chaos, keeps the world going, and puts you on the right path. It’s good deeds, it’s justice, it’s nature, it’s ethics. It’s all of that. And the nature of those things vary somewhat between the Dharmic religions, those being Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism.

Dharma can be found in the Rigveda, an ancient (1500 BCE) piece of Vedic Sanskrit hymns, and the words of the Rigveda were likely orally passed down centuries prior. Initially it refers to the actions of Brahman, a sort of metaphysical principle of inherent universal truth (as far as I understand it), in bringing about and sustaining harmony and order in the universe out of primordial chaos. And it’s passed down to deities and us mortals in turn. We all play a part.
