You know what I’m talking about. They put one in every mall that ever existed in the United States. Well, currently there are 670 out there, so maybe not every mall. Although maybe enough malls have closed at this point that they outnumber the malls?

Anyway, Spencer Gifts was founded by one Max Spencer Adler back in 1947 as a mail-order novelty business. You get the catalog, you buy the products. None of the sex toys or pop culture stuff yet… More like at-home cotton candy machines. It wasn’t until 1963 that a physical location would open, over in the Cherry Hill Mall of New Jersey, only two years after the mall itself had opened. Stores continued to pop up around the country, although the founding Spencer Adler sold it by 1967 to an entertainment conglomerate (MCA, later Universal Studios). It kept trucking for several decades, finally closing mail-orders in 1990 and acquiring Spirit Halloween in 1999. And they’re still around today, as Spencer’s.
