About Ettore Winery: “Located in Hopland, California in Mendocino’s Sanel Valley, our winery is more than one hundred years old. Situated directly at the foot of the mighty Duncan Peak — whose refreshingly cool air assists the ripening of our organic grapes — our 64 acre estate is planted to 35 acres of vineyards which are interspersed with cover crops to promote and sustain ecological balance.”

TASTING NOTES: “Deep ruby color. An elegant, silky and rich wine, with layers of fruit: blackberry and currant, spices, clove, anise, as well as licorice and dark chocolate. Medium-high body, with velvety finish.” (AbV 14%)

VARIETALS: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot.

BARRELS: French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Low-intervention is the house style — organic grapes, hand-harvested by everyone on staff, owner included.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Ettore Bugatti.

Born in Milan in 1881 to a family of artists — his father Carlo designed furniture and jewelry, his brother Rembrandt was a sculptor — Ettore Bugatti built cars instead. His first, at 17.

The Bugatti Type 35 dominated Grand Prix racing through the 1920s. But the legend is the Type 57SC Atlantic, a coupe with a raised dorsal spine running from hood to tail, riveted into place because the body’s magnesium alloy would have caught fire if they’d tried to weld it. Only four were ever built. One of them — Jean Bugatti’s own car — vanished after World War II and hasn’t been seen since. It’s either hidden somewhere extraordinary or lost somewhere ordinary.

Another Atlantic sold around 2010 for a figure reported between $30 and $40 million. The exact number was never disclosed. It’s probably the higher one.
