TASTING NOTES: “Juicy black and red cherry bring down the house with this wine. Elegant cinnamon and baking spice notes from the barrel integrate well with the rich and bright red fruit, together making this a great example and expression of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.” (AbV 13.5%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Good ol’ Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Raven,” of course. In the poem, an unnamed narrator laments the loss of his love, Lenore, when he lets a raven tapping on his window into the room. At first somewhat amused by the bird’s presence, it reveals that it has learned to repeat a single word: nevermore. The narrator then find himself working through his feelings of loss under the guise of having a conversation with the raven, knowing full well that the bird can only say the one word.

When Poe first tried to sell the poem for publication, it was declined, but they gave him $15 as charity. The next time he tried, he got $9 for it. It didn’t take too long, however, for it to catch on, showing up in numerous different periodicals around the US. With its sudden success, publishers Wiley and Putnam went “oh shi-“ and hastily put out a collection of his prose. Poe became a household name.
