THAT REMINDS ME OF: How further and farther aren’t rooted in the word far.

Yeah, that’s right. Further and farther had nothing to do with far. In truth, the comparative form of far was actually farrer. In some sort of back alley linguistic brawl in the 17th century, further/farther beat farrer out of common use. Coincidentally, the words sounded similar and had a similar meaning. Then where the heck is further from?

Well, forth. It is forth-er.

Forth has always meant forward. So what better way to communicate more forward than to make it forth-er. Granted, the Old English versions were forð and forðor, which would also be spelled furðor. Over the past couple centuries, farther and further additionally have had somewhat of a split despite originally being interchangeable. While farther still refers to a physical distance, further also handles the figurative stuff, hence furthermore.
