TASTING NOTES: “Brambleberry, violets, orange peel, cloves and black currant. Swirling brings forth ripe black fruits, cinnamon, toast, baking spice, fig and dried herbs. The mouthfeel is full, smooth and slightly lush with great tension mid-palate. Flavors evolve from red and dark cherry, blackberry, licorice, and coffee, to sweet tobacco, minerality, and wood, with firm tannins and a lingering finish. Drink now or for the next 10 years.” (AbV 14.6%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Cloves.

Cloves, what the heck are they? Spices seem to come from all sorts of plant sources, usually dried leaves, seeds, bark, berries, etcetera. Cloves specifically are the dried flower buds of the clove tree, Syzygium aromaticum, native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia. Naturally they were used in the regional cuisine for quite some time before showing up elsewhere in the world, but they were a valuable traded commodity as early as the 1700’s BC. They found some in a house in Syria from 1720 BC, which is pretty wild when you imagine the distance back then. Nowadays they’re grown in more locales, such as Madagascar, Tanzania, and Sri Lanka.

Cloves have a very distinct aroma and flavor, in large part due to how much eugenol is in them. You might also find it in cinnamon and nutmeg, but cloves are something like 90% eugenol when you extract their essential oils.
