The Old Grist Mill

TASTING NOTES: “Abounding with an array of black currants, fig jam, and ripe plums, this brambly Zinfandel is a delight to the senses. Cinnamon and sweet tobacco are woven together with an undelaying essence of white pepper and wood spice. Silky, well-balanced tannins support the mid-palate, while a refreshing lift of bright acidity completes the package.” (AbV 14.5%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: “The Old Grist Mill,” the first episode of the acclaimed animated miniseries Over the Garden Wall.

Half-brothers Wirt (voiced by Elijah Wood) and Greg are lost in a deep, dark wood that only seems to get deeper and darker as they walk. Neither recalls how they got there, but they know they want to go home. This place is called the Unknown. And in these woods, they come upon a woodsman. A man literally only known to us as the Woodsman, in fact (voiced by Christopher Lloyd). The Woodsman offers to provide shelter for the two lost boys in the old grist mill he’s been using to process the wood he chops into fuel for his lantern. Greg accidentally lures a monstrous beast with glowing eyes to the mill, and in the ensuing scuffle, the grist mill is destroyed.

If you haven’t watched this series, you should. It’s short, but it’s great. Lots of 19th century and early 20th century Americana style.
