Hooked On Darjeeling

TASTING NOTES: “Lush and inviting, the 2019 Martaella offering abounds in captivating aromas of blueberry pie, cherry cola, and cassis. Hints of wild violets, Darjeeling tea, and allspice invite further exploration. Intensely concentrated upon entry, rustic tannins coat the mid-palate, but are quickly resolved by the amazing depth of flavor and power that this wine delivers year after year.” (AbV 13.7%, pH 3.30, TA 6.80 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Darjeeling.

The tea. Not the place. Which the tea is, itself, named after. Because as it turns out, that is a very important part of being Darjeeling tea. Made from Camellia sinensis, Darjeeling can be a black, green, white, and even oolong tea, apparently. What makes it Darjeeling specifically is that it is grown in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts of West Bengal, India! Like an appellation for wine, really. Currently there are 87 tea gardens recognized by the official Tea Board of India as Darjeeling producers.

The Camellia sinensis planted in Darjeeling actually got smuggled out of China and were first planted in India by botanist, doctor, and hospital superintendent Archibald Campbell in service of the East India Company. Along with several other teas he tried growing there, Camellia sinensis was the one that flourished.
