Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo D’Alba Vigna Valmaggiore from Piemonte, Italy - “Red garnet in color with orange hints. The nose presents intense notes of violet and ripe strawberry. An excellent, well-integrated tannin structure accompanied by good acidity providing freshness.” (AbV 15%, pH 3.53)

Bruno Giacosa Dolcetto D’Alba DOC from Piemonte, Italy - “Lively ruby red with purple highlights. The nose is intense and complex with notes of fresh red fruit and blackberries. The palate is full and balanced with a good structure.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.64)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Strawberry.

Here’s a fun bit of botanical treachery: botanists don’t classify strawberries as true berries at all. A “true berry” has to develop from a single flower with one ovary — grapes qualify, so do tomatoes, so does a banana (yes, a banana). A strawberry is instead something called an “accessory fruit,” where the red flesh you’re eating is a swollen flower stem, and the actual fruits are those tiny yellow specks studding the outside — each one its own dry, seed-like fruit called an achene. So a strawberry isn’t one fruit at all. It’s hundreds of them, wearing a very convincing disguise.

Which makes grapes the quiet overachievers of the produce aisle — no costume, no PR campaign, just a straightforward single-ovary fruit that also happens to be sturdy enough to survive fermentation, oak, and fourteen months of patience. Strawberries get the summer shortcake. Grapes get the vintage.
