THAT REMINDS ME OF: Grandeur.
Specifically: “delusions of grandeur,” a phrase so useful it graduated from casual insult to actual clinical term. Psychiatrists use “grandiosity” to describe the flavor of megalomania where a person is convinced they’re secretly royalty, a deity, Napoleon reincarnated, or all three at once. Napoleon himself gets cited so often as the textbook case that “Napoleon complex” became its own separate diagnosis-that-isn’t-really-a-diagnosis, which feels like a raw deal for a guy who, historically, was extremely correct about being important.
My favorite fictional case study is Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard, a faded silent film star living alone in a decaying mansion, still convinced the whole world is waiting for her comeback. “I am big,” she says. “It’s the pictures that got small.” Nobody asked her. She told them anyway, staircase and all. There’s something almost admirable about grandeur that doesn’t require an audience to sustain itself — it just runs on its own supply.
