“The 2019 Guerrieri Rizzardi Keya leaps from the glass in a rich and ripe display, showing sweet honeydew melon, offset by hints of sage and mint, with sweet smoke and pretty florals. Silky textures then flood the senses with ripe fruits offset by a twang of zesty acids and minerals, also taking on a hint of tropical citrus. It finishes long yet vibrant, slowly sizzling away and just begging me to take another sip.”

The origin of the carrot on a stick idiom likely came from writers in the mid-1800’s who in turn had referred to a caricature showing such a “device” being used to motivate a donkey in a race. A carrot is dangled off a string tied to a stick held by the rider, thus the donkey will try to approach the carrot despite the carrot never getting closer. Usually it is a metaphor for a promised reward meant to entice someone to do something. Stemming from this idiom is the carrot-and-stick (or carrot-or-stick) metaphor, which rather than just being a dangled reward refers to the use of both reward and punishment to motivate. I feel like it gets away from the original concept, though. Like, the stick was just a tool to keep the carrot ahead of the donkey. In the carrot-and-stick concept, you either give the donkey the carrot as a reward or whack it with a stick, if I’m reading it correctly.
