TASTING NOTES: “This wine exhibits complex aromas, with ripe pomegranate and strawberries accentuated by clean clay, and beautiful floral aromas. Its fresh acidity brightens the soft tannins and showcases wonderful notes of rhubarb pie, cinnamon bark and pink peppercorns. THAT REMINDS ME OF: Pink peppercorns.

I never really thought about it, but peppercorns are weird little things, aren’t they? Little crunchy things you grind up into spicy dust you put on your food. What’s the deal with those, huh?

I don’t know why this is so surprising to me, but they’re dried berries! All ground pepper is made from dried berries. The black pepper we know so well comes from Piper nigrum, but there are a couple other peppercorns out there known as pink peppercorns. Euonymus phellomanus comes from Madagascar. Schinus molle comes from Peru. Schinus terebinthifolia comes from Brazil.

Interestingly, the Peruvian and Brazilian ones are part of the cashew family! Meaning they might cause an allergic reaction in people with tree nut allergies.
