TASTING NOTES:
2020 Keller Estate Oro De Plata Chardonnay - “Bright aromas of lemon curd, crisp green apple, and jasmine excite the senses, while notes of orchard fruit meld with creamy lees and mineral nuances on the palate. The elegant balance of fruit, acid, and rich mouthfeel leads to a long, rounded finish.” (AbV 14.22%, pH 3.47)
2021 Keller Estate Oro De Plata Chardonnay - “The 2021 Keller Estate Oro de Plata Chardonnay has aromas of lychee and just ripe pineapple, followed by floral notes of white petals. In the mouth, the wine has an apple or pear skin flavor paired with a palate-cleansing astringency which gives the wine length and dimension. There are notes of tres leches cake and waffle cone. This wine is lively in the mouth and full of fruit flavor. Without oak contact, the true essence of the Chardonnay grape varietal is delivered here.” (AbV 14.1%, pH 3.39)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Waffle cone.
The origin story I always heard: 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, brutal heat wave, an ice cream vendor runs out of paper dishes. Conveniently, the guy at the next stall over is selling a thin Persian waffle called zalabia. He rolls one into a cone, hands it over, ice cream cone is born. Nice tidy story.
Except at least four different guys — Ernest Hamwi, Abe Doumar, the Menches brothers — all separately claimed to have invented it, at the same fair, the same summer, sometimes at stalls that were reportedly right next to each other. There’s no single hero here, just a pile of guys in 1904 St. Louis all pretty sure history owes them a plaque. I love that the invention of one of the most universally beloved foods on Earth immediately devolved into a decades-long turf war fought entirely in old men’s memoirs.
