About Kitek: “The original inhabitants of Mendoza and San Juan were the Huarpes, a peaceful and working native community. They used to have a tradition of gathering around the fire (KITEK) for celebrations in the night, where they drank and ate until dawn. They believed that the fire helped to warm the body and the food and infusions helped to calm the soul. Inspired by the essence of this idea, we made this wine, which is reflected in this piece of art, a synthesis of colors, wood, music; elements that are related to the wine’s world.”

TASTING NOTES: “Bright yellow in color with subtle green tones. Citrus aromas of pink grapefruit on the nose, accompanied by scents of white peach and delicate herbal notes. It is very fresh on the palate with a good acidity level, which makes it an easy-drinking wine.” (AbV 13%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The Huarpes, or Warpes.

An indigenous group from the Cuyo region of Argentina, they were indeed a primarily peaceful bunch. Farmers, hunters, and gatherers who started settling villages in the 5th century (CE/AD), they spoke their own Huarpe language. They worshipped a deity named Hunuc Huar as well as the land and celestial bodies.

The Incan Empire arose in the 1400’s and started to influence the Huarpes, but they never quite joined the empire. The Incan Empire expanded down from Peru all the way to about the edge of Cuyo, which is impressive considering they apparently didn’t use wheels? Anyway, they did end up being somewhat of a trendsetter, leading some Huarpes to start llama ranching and learn Quechua, the dominant language of the empire. Once the Spaniards conquered the Inca, their biggest obstacle, the rest of the region would fall to Spanish or Spanish-influenced rule.
