TASTING NOTES: “Lush and delicious, our 2021 Kukeri Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is very well balanced with great structure and texture, on the nose orange peel zest flavors leads into a brilliant menagerie of shaved almonds, toasted brioche and caramel, and lightly vanilla oak. In the glass, bright yellow straw with golden hues, medium weight on the palate with balanced silky mouthfeel and bright acidity. Long and lingering finish.” (AbV 14.0%, pH 3.42)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Jiggery-pokery. It usually means deceit or trickery.

It’s a bit weird sounding, don’t you think? Considering neither part of the phrase are prominent words in the English language on their own. Typically that indicates one of the following: it’s nonsense that sounded funny/memorable enough that people hung onto it, or it’s something from another language that was anglicized.

While it certainly sounds similar to a higgledy-piggledy or hocus-pocus, jiggery-pokery is the latter case. The source phrase joukery-pawkery is one of Scottish origin. Joukery refers to trickery, and pawkery/pawky means to be artful or sly about it. Sometime in the 19th century, around or before 1845, this slipped south into England, caught on, and then made the journey across the Atlantic to the US.
