About Laurent Miquel: “The vineyards at Laurent Miquel in Languedoc have a history of winemaking that goes all the way back to 1202, when the monks of Abbey de Fontcaude first began growing vines there. Today, alongside his wife Neasa, Laurent Miquel is the 8th generation of his family to work these vineyards and is known for growing varietals not normally grown in the region such as Syrah and Albariño. His winemaking philosophy is to respect the past, but constantly try to improve upon it and as a result, has created some of the most elegant French wines in the region.”

TASTING NOTES:
Merlot - “A classic French Merlot ripe, generous, and smooth with delicious berry flavours and a touch of oak.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.70, TA 2.80 g/L, RS 1.5 g/L)

Alaina - “Our Alaina Languedoc is a typical southern French blend with a dominant varietal of spicy Syrah. This wine offers a ripe nose of red fruits, with spices and aromatic herbs. The palate is mellow with intense berry flavor and a hint of rosemary notes.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.7, RS <1 g/L)

Cabernet Sauvignon - “An exceptional example of smooth silky tannins and bright rich red fruit ﬂavours. Our 100% Cabernet offers classic cassis on the nose complemented by hints of spice on the rich palate. Very well balanced and shows depth on the ﬁnish.” (AbV 14%, pH 3.61, TA 3.3 g/L, RS 2.10 g/L)

Pinot Noir - “Solas Pinot Noir is a well-balanced, food-friendly wine with a medium body and light, bright berry ﬂavours – red cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. Smooth on the palate with aromas of garrigue strawberries and rosemary and hints of Indian spiced tea on the ﬁnish.” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.52, TA 3.40 g/L, RS <0.8 g/L)

VARIETALS: Alaina is 70% Syrah, 30% Grenache. The rest are single varietal.

BARRELS: Majority of each wine is in stainless steel while a portion is aged for a few months to a year in French oak.

PAIRS WITH: Pinot Noir with charcuterie or Bouillabaisse. Cabernet with beef tartare, a rare steak, seared tuna, or smoked aubergines. Alaina with grilled beef or chicken and mature cheeses. Merlot with whatever you feel like (or broadly, a dinner).

THAT REMINDS ME OF: In 2022, the game Elden Ring took the world by storm, a collaboration between famous author George R.R. Martin (Game of Thrones) and acclaimed Japanese developers From Software (Dark Souls, Sekiro). It’s recent downloadable expansion, Shadows of the Erdtree, once again took the world by storm this summer.

In the game, Queen Marika is a mortal woman who ascends to godhood after a very rough life. She would have several children, most of them cursed. Two of them ended up with all kinds of animal parts growing on them. One was cursed to slowly rot over her lifetime. And one was cursed to be forever a child. This one was named Miquella. Though unable to age, Miquella possessed some unique talents. Prime among them was the ability to charm literally anybody. This made him both powerful and terrifying, despite his meek, pacifistic vibe and childlike appearance. Miquella would attempt to cure both his and his sister’s curses in vain, and failing that, decided he would succeed his mother as god of this world to usher in an age characterized by unconditional compassion and love… by any means necessary.
