TASTING NOTES: “Bright ruby red color. The nose predominantly shows aromas of strawberry and blackberry, with notes of currant, black cherry, aromatic herbs, and roasted red pepper gradually appearing. Aging in oak barrels enhances the aromatic complexity, adding notes of tiramisu and nuts. On the palate, this wine is firm, with present tannins that enhance its liveliness and charm.“ (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.72, TA 3.19 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Los Vascos, or “the Basque.”

The Basque people have quite a history. Originating around the western Pyrenees, between current day France and Spain, their kingdom, once known as the Kingdom of Pamplona or Navarre, would be split between the two nations. In the 1500’s, Spain managed to completely bring the Basque south of the Pyrenees under their dominion. The Basque north of the Pyrenees managed to stay relatively autonomous for a while, until the French Revolution, wherein that autonomy was violently stripped away.

Meanwhile, many of the Basque would migrate and integrate into the societies of both nations. Spain’s conquest of Navarre south of the Pyrenees coincided with the Conquista period, where Spanish colonizers began spreading throughout South and Central America. Thus a lot of Basque people, drawn into Spain’s colonization effort, would migrate to places like Chile between the 16th and 20th centuries. Chile in particular, since about the 18th century, has an estimated 30% of its population made-up by Basque diaspora and descendants.
