Shockingly, Yamhill isn’t named for yams. I know, I know. Immersion shattered. Hopes dashed. Yams crushed. Although, who’s to say what a yam really is. In the US it might be a sweet potato. In Malaysia it might be taro. In New Zealand it might be oca. Everything’s a yam. The true yam, that yam which is a yam no matter where I am, is in my heart. Or in the genus Dioscorea. Safe to go with the latter.

So where did Yamhill come from? Well, like many things in the US where the name doesn’t seem super obvious or just wholesale lifted from somewhere in Europe, it’s an attempt to anglicize/transcribe a native tribe’s name. Yep, the Yamhela tribe of the region became Yamhill for the county, city, and river’s names.
