The Pale Strawberry

TASTING NOTES: Pale strawberry in the glass. Delicate floral and peach aromas. Round and creamy on the tongue, with elegant flavors and a well-balanced crispness. (AbV 12.5%, pH 3.28, TA 0.73 g/100mL, RS 0.9%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: White strawberries.

Not a “blue raspberry” situation, white strawberries are the real deal. White strawberries aren’t red strawberries that turned white, but instead strawberries that couldn’t turn red. A protein involved in the ripening process specifically is what turns them red normally. Any white versions have a much smaller amount of that protein, or even don’t have it at all. Some varieties of Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria vesca can have white fruit, but the most well known is probably the Pineberry.

The Pineberry is a cross between Fragaria chiloensis and Fragaria virginiana that was kicked off by a Dutch berry grower in the mid-2000’s. Pineberries have a low yield, so it wasn’t until 2010 that they started to reach commercial volumes. In addition to the white berries, they also taste different from strawberries. People believe it tastes almost like a pineapple, hence the name “pineberries.”
