TASTING NOTES: “This stunning 2018 vintage opens with aromas of ripe red berries, mocha, fresh herbs, and baking spices. On the palate, robust notes of dark cherry, cranberry, plum and raspberry are accented with lively hints of cinnamon, clove, and wild sage. Together, these flavors are balanced with a lush texture, silky tannins, and bright acidity.“ (AbV 14.2%)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Rubies. Because of the vineyard being Ruby Grapes Vineyard.

What is a ruby? Beyond being a pretty red gemstone, I mean.

Rubies are a type of corundum, minerals of aluminum oxide. Corundum is naturally transparent, but often has a hue to it due to various metal impurities. Rubies specifically contain varying amounts of chromium inside them, giving them their red color. Any other gemstone-quality corundum is considered a sapphire, with all the non-chromium impurities that give them non-red colors. Rubies are just special, I guess.

Another fun fact about rubies, they are generally a 9 on the Mohs scale. Corundum is for the most part. It is, in fact, the mineral poster-child for a 9 on the Mohs scale. So a ruby can take on most other minerals.
