Playing Paso

TASTING NOTES: “Robust and distinctive, Paso Point Syrah opens with aromas of blackberries, ripe plums, black cherries with notes of tarragon, pepper, mocha and sweet oak. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, composed of soft structured tannins that lead into a lingering black fruit finish.” (AbV 14.5%)

VARIETALS: Syrah

BARRELS: American and French oak.

PAIRS WITH: Slow-roasted barbeque pork or smoked steaks.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Playing possum, or the more technical term tonic immobility.

Usually a form of defense, some animals act like they are dead in certain situations. Now, normally, you might think this would have the opposite effect. Animal gets ambushed by a predator, they fall over dead, predator gets a free meal. It turns out, a lot of predators only have interest in live prey. Presumably the predator would realize that the animal that is playing dead was alive literally a second ago and therefore couldn’t have gone bad in such a short period of time, but apparently not!

Helps when some animals, like the hog-nosed snake, secrete fluids that smell bad. The predator naturally loses interest in the foul-smelling, seemingly-dead thing as a way to avoid potential diseases. So I guess if you’re going to play dead in some situation, just be stinky too.
