TASTING NOTES: “Aromas of rose petals, pomegranate and a touch of nutmeg in the nose. A light body frames the flavors of cherry, plum and vanilla with a touch of minerality and balanced acidity. A round smooth finish with lingering fruit flavors is offset by smooth tannins. An elegant Pinot Noir.” (AbV 14.2%, pH 3.83, TA 0.585 g/100mL)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: The hand grenade.

The word grenade comes from the French, and originally referred to the pomegranate. Because the bombs were roughly pomegranate sized and shaped, it seems they ended up with the name. It’s even been used in the English language since the late 16th century. Grenade-like explosives existed in China and India a few centuries earlier, but the first iron grenades started showing up in Europe in the 1400’s. They were balls of iron or ceramics filled with gunpowder and had a wick or igniter sticking out. Their exposed wicks and inconsistent detonation timing made them a bit impractical to use, particularly when combat centered around fortified buildings like castles died down, until the early 1900’s.

With the advent of trench warfare, grenades were once again useful, although they had to have the whole inconsistency thing worked on. Some were developed that would detonate upon hitting the ground, but those also proved to be somewhat inconsistent. Also, if you pulled your arm back before throwing it from a trench, you were likely to bump it on the wall behind you. Not good. So the pin version was designed. After pulling the pin, the lever on the side can move to release a spring-loaded firing pin, which hits a primer and ignites a wick that goes down into the body of the grenade, which then ignites a second primer that activates the detonator. And then it goes boom.
