TASTING NOTES:
2020 - “We want this wine to speak of its cool-climate origins, while showcasing the diversity of the Santa Barbara County. All the grapes came from select vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley where sunny days and very cold nights encourage a long, even ripening of Grenache and result in a diverse flavor profile with a rich, long finish. The final blend yields a quintessential Santa Barbara County Grenache.” (AbV 14.5%)

2023 - “We want this wine to speak of its cool-climate origins, while showcasing the diversity of the Santa Barbara County. 90% of the wine comes from 20+ year old vines growing in the warmer soils of the Los Olivos district (not far from the winery) that yield a medium-dark color, with spicy red fruit notes and aromatic lift. The remaining 10% is grown in the sandy, gravelly hillside soils of Ballard Canyon, where we find slightly cooler days and even colder nights that reveal blood orange and baking spice notes. The final blend yields a quintessential Santa Barbara County Grenache.” (AbV 14.5%)

VARIETALS: 2020 is 100% Grenache, 2023 is 96% Grenache 4% Syrah.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Cujo.

Perhaps the most grounded Stephen King novel I can think of. The monster is rabies, because rabies is real and terrifying.

Cujo is the Saint Bernard of mechanic Joe Cambers. When Cujo is bit by a bat, he gets infected with rabies and kills Joe. Donna Trenton and her son Tad attempt to bring their car to Joe’s to get it repaired, only to become trapped in it by the rabid Cujo. It ends up being a rock-and-a-hard-place type of situation, as the sun increasingly heats the car to unbearable levels. Circumstances continue to delay their rescue, including a red herring delaying the cops and the death of the sheriff, until Donna is forced to take on Cujo mano-a-mano.
