THAT REMINDS ME OF: Rikki-Tikki-Tavi! One of the short stories in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, although it is also based on an ancient Indian story about mongoose and snakes.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi is a mongoose rescued by a family and allowed to reside in their garden. While he befriends some of the other creatures, there are a few scheming snakes around. The cobras Nag and Nagaina dislike the human family for being in their territory and plot to take them out. Rikki, being a mongoose, is the natural enemy of the snakes, and saves the family on three or four separate occasions.

Rikki goes as far as killing the cobras’ unhatched babies and using the last egg to lure Nagaina away from the family, only to then kill both her and the last egg. Brutal.
