THAT REMINDS ME OF: The Roche limit.

Did you know that when a smaller celestial body, held together by its own gravity, approaches a larger body, the smaller one will be torn apart? Particularly if the smaller body is not some sort of solid mass.

The point at which the larger body’s tidal forces overwhelm the gravity of the smaller body is known as the Roche limit, named after Éduoard Roche. Many large objects in space are held together by gravity. Stars, planets, comets, even most asteroids. That gravity ends up negated once it comes close enough that the force of gravity from a larger body is greater. This is a way that some planets end up with rings, as the crumbled smaller body gradually loses pieces of itself.

In my mind, it’s like slowly pushing a cookie against a spinning wheel. You end up with a line of cookie dust stuck around it.
