TASTING NOTES: “Our 2020 Chardonnay has notes of baked peach, pie crust and hints of brioche. Bright acid on the palate leads to flavors of lemon curd and citrus cheesecake with hints of fresh sage and brown butter on the finish.

The 2020 Chardonnay is classic, elegant and food friendly: 100% Chardonnay with aromas and flavors of ripe pear, Golden Delicious apple, citrus and spice.” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.49, TA 0.54 g/100mL)

VARIETALS: 100% Chardonnay

BARRELS: Stainless steel and mixed oak barrels.

PAIRS WITH: Apple spinach salad, chicken piccatta or lemon poundcake.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: Ranch dressing.

A mayonnaise-based dressing with sour cream and buttermilk, seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, onion, chives, parsley, and dill.

African American plumbing-contractor-turned-ranch-owner Steven Henson created it at, what do you know, Hidden Valley Ranch! Yes, Henson was the owner of the original Hidden Valley Ranch, a guest ranch he ran with his wife after he moved from Anchorage, Alaska down to the San Marcos Pass in Santa Barbara County in the 50’s. At said ranch, he opened a steakhouse, and in that steakhouse they served the ranch dressing. At first, due to its popularity, customers would walk away with jars of it for home, but eventually he started selling the dry mix by mail-order and to stores. It was popular enough they made Hidden Valley Ranch Food Products, Inc. and even got a factory.

In the early 70’s, the brand was bought out by Clorox… didn’t realize they were involved in things other than bleach, to be honest. What a world.
