TASTING NOTES: “Blanc du Tusque is blended from our hand farmed lots of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc to reflect the traditions of Bordeaux and the terroir of Sonoma County.

Like the Sauvignon Blanc, the Semillon was picked early. Totally a winemaker and farmer “feel” that I needed to pick it. This gave us a (naturally) very low alcohol wine that is still wonderfully mouth filling, refreshing, and vibrant. I know I blended in a little chardonnay from our Church Block but that is just me having fun. Beautiful floral notes, very perfumy, and rich lemon oil aromatics make this a truly lovely sip of wine.” (AbV 12.2%, pH 3.4, TA 6.2 g/L)

THAT REMINDS ME OF: San gréal, also known as the Holy Grail.

Most people think of the Holy Grail as a cup used by Jesus Christ during the Last Supper, probably because of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, although that’d likely been a popular contemporary interpretation anyway. In truth, the concept of the Holy Grail as we know it began in the late 12th century, the product of multiple writers producing poetry and literature based on Arthurian legend.

While Robert de Boron established the idea of the grail being from the Last Supper in his poems slightly after, the first mention of the grail appears to have been in Chrétian de Troyes’ Perceval, the Story of the Grail. In this poem, the grail is a decorated platter bearing a single Communion wafer on it. Perceval sees it in the court of the Fisher King, a mythical British king who has a wound that will not heal. The wafer on the grail is what keeps him alive despite his grave injury. The story would be left unfinished by Chrétian, however, which left several other writers, inspired by what he’d established, to extrapolate on the tale and the grail. Thus the grail would turn into a cup, the cup would become the key feature rather than the wafer, and the Christian aspects of the tale deepened and became more explicit.
