TASTING NOTES: “Produced from select vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County, this Bordeaux-style predominantly Merlot blend was harvested to capture fresh fruit flavors and good energy in its texture. (The Santa Ynez Valley Meritage was originally destined for a client in China but was derailed by COVID.) This is a fantastic summer sipper!” (AbV 13.8%, 82% Merlot 10% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Cabernet Franc 2% Petite Verdot)

So, the original “Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe” rhyme is very racist, if you aren’t aware by now. Either you’re old enough to have heard the original out in the world, or you’re young enough to have never known until it was pointed out to you later. People tried sanitizing it by replacing the offending word with “tiger” quite a while back, maybe some instances of that dating all the way back to the early 20th century, but there’s a lingering bad taste to it.

And despite that, the rhyme is still popular. It’s baked into our brains. It makes me wonder, would it be better for children to learn the sanitized version, potentially never knowing its history, or to just collectively let the rhyme die from public knowledge? Can it ever be free of the baggage it carries? And if it still retains that baggage, why do we continue to teach it to children? Will there come a point where knowledge of that baggage becomes ubiquitous enough that it finally tips the scale and enough people decide it just isn’t worth keeping around that it dies for good? Will we live long enough to even know?

Anyway, this is a good wine.
